Who is Mohana Singh, who became the first woman pilot to fly Tejas fighter aircraft, has a deep connection with Rajasthan

New Delhi: Squadron Leader Mohana Singh has become India’s first woman pilot to be part of IAF’s Tejas fighter squadron. Mohana Singh was one of the first three women fighter pilots to join the IAF in June 2016. She has been assigned to the No. 18 ‘Flying Bullets’ Squadron based in Naliya, Gujarat. Recently, Mohana participated in the multilateral aerial combat exercise called Tarang Shakti. She was previously part of the No. 3 Fighter Squadron, based in Naliya, Rajasthan, and flew MiG-21 Bison aircraft. Avani Chaturvedi, Bhawana Kanth and Mohana Singh were among the first batch of women fighter pilots of the IAF. They were commissioned into the IAF in 2016, within a year of the government deciding to open the fighter stream for women on a pilot basis.

She has done many amazing things before

In February 2018, Avani Chaturvedi became the first Indian woman to fly a MiG-21 Bison solo in a fighter aircraft, taking off from the IAF’s Jamnagar base. Recently, the Defence Ministry has announced that the pilot scheme for women fighter pilots that was to be introduced in 2022 has now been converted into a permanent scheme.

Who is Squadron Leader Mohana Singh?

Squadron Leader Mohana Singh is a prominent female fighter pilot of the Indian Air Force. She was born on 22 January 1992 in Jhunjhunu, Rajasthan. Her father, Pratap Singh, is a retired Air Force officer and her mother, Manju Singh, is a teacher. Mohana Singh received her early education from Air Force School, Delhi and later earned a BTech degree in Electronics and Communication from Global Institute of Management and Emerging Technologies in Amritsar, Punjab. She joined the Indian Air Force in June 2016 and became part of the group of first female fighter pilots along with Avani Chaturvedi and Bhawana Kanth. Mohana Singh flew the MiG-21 aircraft and is now commanding a squadron of LCA Tejas fighter jets. She was also awarded the Nari Shakti Puraskar in 2020.
