New Delhi : Highway travelers have spent about Rs 2.1 lakh crore as user fees since the government started collecting toll on national highways in 2000. The ministry said in a written reply in the Lok Sabha on Thursday that during the last 24 years, private highways for the sections built under the Public Private Partnership (PPP) mode Toll worth about Rs 1.4 lakh crore has been collected from the construction companies. Among these stretches, the Gurgaon-Jaipur corridor of NH-48 has collected around Rs 8,528 crore as user charges.

UP number 1 in toll collection

While private companies recoup their investments in highway projects from the toll collected from the sections under PPP. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) receives toll only from those sections that are built with 100% government funding. Among the states, the highest toll came from highway users in Uttar Pradesh. UP also has the largest highway network in the country. No toll revenue was received from northeastern states like Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland.

Toll on 45 thousand kilometers of NH

At present, toll is being levied on about 45,000 km of NH out of about 1.5 lakh km. The government collects toll only on those highways which are at least two and a half lanes. NHAI aims to bring more highways under toll coverage to increase revenue. In another reply, the ministry informed the lower house that in the last five years, the government has spent Rs 10.2 lakh crore for the construction and maintenance of NHs.

Rs 1.44 lakh crore toll collection

The government has collected Rs 1.44 lakh crore as toll tax at fee plazas operated under the Public Private Partnership (PPP) model on national highways since December 2000. In a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha, Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said all user toll plazas on national highways are established as per the provision of the National Highway Toll (Determination of Rates and Collection) Rules, 2008 and the relevant concession agreement. Are.

Gadkari said that since December 2000, an amount of Rs 1.44 lakh crore has been collected as user fees at toll plazas operated under the Public Private Partnership (PPP) model on national highways.
