Limiting the number of study permits: More than 4 lakh Indian students are studying in Canada. In view of the increasing number of foreign students, Canada has fixed the number of study permits issued. A target was set to issue only 3,60,000 study permits in 2024. Trudeau said Canada plans to cut the number of study permits by 35% in 2024. Because of his/her decision, students going to study from India faced difficulties.

Closing the SDS program: Canada announced the closure of ‘Student Direct Stream’ (SDS) in November 2024. Through SDS, students from many countries including India used to get study permit quickly. Usually, students received study permits within 20 days. Now Indians have to apply for a study permit through the regular route, which takes 8 weeks.

Changes in PGWP: Canada announced changes in the rules of ‘Post Graduate Work Permit’ i.e. PGWP in November itself. It was announced to give PGWP only to the students studying in fields like Agriculture and Agro Food, Healthcare, Sciences, Technology, Engineering, Maths, Skill Trade and Transportation. Additionally, the language requirements for work permits were also increased.

Increasing financial needs: Students going to study in Canada have to present proof that they have enough money to study. They also have to demonstrate that they can cover their expenses while studying in Canada. Earlier, having $10,000 in the account fulfilled the requirement of having enough money for studies, but then in January 2024, it was increased to $20,000.

Changes in Express Entry policies: Express Entry is the most effective route for people looking to obtain permanent residency in Canada. In December, the government said that now the extra points given under Express Entry if a job offer from a Canadian company will not be given. Because of this, people who were thinking of getting PR after getting a job in Canada got a big shock.
