India’s first sunrise happens here

Dong village is located in Tawang district of Arunachal Pradesh. This is where India’s first sunrise takes place. This village is also called “India’s first sunrise spot”. Dong Valley is also known as the ‘Land of the Rising Sun’ of India. The valley is situated near the easternmost tip of the country and receives the first sunlight every day. It is at an altitude of 1240 meters and people usually reach the highest peak at 2 to 3 in the night to see the sunrise, so that they can see the rising sun first in India.

Along with this, Dong villages are restricted areas as some residents of indigenous tribes live in these villages. Anyone who comes from outside Arunachal Pradesh has to apply for ILP or Inner Line Permit issued by the Arunachal Pradesh government.

If you visit this village, you will have to put in a little effort to see the sun rise first. You have to complete the trek to the place where the sun rises first. Trekking in the dark is a surreal experience when you only get to hear the sound of nature. As you go higher, the temperature starts to drop and the wind also becomes strong. Hence, it is most important to wear warm clothes and cover your hands with gloves.

The sunrise is so mesmerizing that you won’t feel like trekking down. The undulating hills are surrounded by lush greenery. The first rays of light spread their yellow and orange hues on these dense plants and color the environment beautifully. The transformation of the deep blue of the sky into orange and pink stripes is worth capturing with your camera.

When the sun goes up in the sky, it looks beautiful with golden rays falling on the mountains. Dibrugarh Airport in Assam is the nearest airport to Dong village. You can get cabs, taxis and buses to reach Dong which will take around 6-7 hours. If you come from other Indian states and prefer to travel by train, we suggest you reach Guwahati first and rest for a while in Guwahati hotels. After resting, take another train to New Tinsukia Junction. You can then travel from Tinsukia to Namsia and from there to Dong village.
