When Congress crossed ‘400’ under Rajiv’s leadership, know which party got how many seats in that 1984 Lok Sabha election

New Delhi: In just a few hours from now, the results of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections will be declared. If the exit polls prove correct, the BJP-led NDA will easily cross the majority mark by securing 350-400 seats. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who campaigned vigorously, is likely to get a historic third term. With this, he/she will equal the record of the country’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. But this is not the only record that the BJP wants to achieve. With the results starting from 8 am on June 4, all eyes will be on the final number of seats of the NDA. People will see whether the BJP is actually able to achieve ‘400 Paar’ (more than 400 seats). The only time a party achieved this target was in the 1984 general elections. At that time, the Congress led by Rajiv Gandhi won 414 seats. Votes were cast for 541 seats then.

PM Modi gave the slogan of crossing 400

In 2014, when the NDA announced Narendra Modi’s name for the prime minister’s post, it gave a new twist to its Lok Sabha election campaign. This was the beginning of a Modi-centric election campaign for the BJP. Focusing on Gujarat’s development model, the BJP sought votes to oust the Congress from the Centre. At that time, the BJP gave slogans like ‘Ghar Ghar Modi’ and ‘Abki Baar Modi Sarkar’. In 2019, when PM Modi sought a second term, the BJP took the ‘Abki Baar’ slogan forward and came up with the slogan ‘Phir Ek Baar Modi Sarkar’. Like PM Modi’s development work, this slogan also touched the hearts of voters. The NDA registered a consistent victory in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. The alliance increased its number of seats from 336 to 353. This year, as PM Modi aimed to equal Jawaharlal Nehru’s record for a third term, he/she gave the slogan ‘Abki Baar, 400 Paar’, setting a target of 400 seats for the NDA. As he/she campaigned across the country, holding over 200 rallies, road shows and other public outreach events, he/she asked voters to turn ‘400 Paar’ into reality by ensuring that the Congress and the opposition Bharat Bloc do not succeed in their plans to put a ‘Babri lock’ on the temple in Ayodhya or bring back Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir.

When Congress crossed 400

In a few hours from now, we will know whether the NDA will be able to achieve its target of 400 seats or not. This ambitious target has been achieved only once in Indian electoral history, that too in the 1984 Lok Sabha elections. In the 1984 elections held after the assassination of Indira Gandhi, the Rajiv Gandhi-led Congress won 414 out of a total of 541 seats. Apart from the highest number of seats, the Congress also got the highest vote share ever for a single party. At that time, the vote share of the Congress was 48.12 percent. The CPI (M) was in second place. It got 22 seats and 5.71 percent vote share. The BJP then got only 2 seats with 7.4 percent vote share.
