New Delhi: Maratha Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj had established Hindu Swarajya. During this period, the whole of India was ruled by the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. It was the day of Vijayadashami, when Shivaji made the Marathas rise in India. When Aurangzeb attacked the Deccan, Shivaji attacked the forts of Ahmednagar and Racine. In these wars, Shivaji had defeated Aurangzeb’s forces several times. he/she also defeated Shaista Khan, a general of Aurangzeb. Shivaji Maharaj was a naval strategist as well as a master of fort fighting. Conquering forts was started by Shivaji Maharaj at the age of 16 from Torna Fort of Bijapur.

Conquered more than 300 forts in 35 years, Aurangzeb in tension

During his/her 35 years of life, Shivaji had conquered more than 300 forts. These forts played an important role in both land and sea defence. In 1674 he/she was formally crowned as the king of the Maratha Empire. he/she expanded his/her empire to include significant parts of present-day Maharashtra, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

Shivaji had taken the pledge of Hindavi Swaraj on Vijayadashami.

On the auspicious occasion of Vijayadashami i.e. Dussehra, it is believed that since the time of Lord Rama, this day had been a symbol of victory departure. Lord Rama also left for the war against Ravana on this day. Maratha Ratna Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj had also taken the initiative to protect Hindu religion and establish Hinduvi Swaraj by marching against Aurangzeb on the same day.

Victory campaign in the sea from forts like Sindhudurg, Vijaydurg

Shivaji Maharaj had built many forts to protect the sea borders, one of which was the fort of Sindhudurg located on the Malvan coast of Maharashtra. It was also an important naval base. It was one of the many naval forts built by Shivaji Maharaj to protect the Konkan coastline. Shivaji also built the fort of Vijaydurg on the Konkan coast in a similar manner. Sea ships were made here.

Attacks on temples were done to provoke Shivaji

According to the Maharashtra government’s book ‘Shiv Chhatrapati’, Afzal Khan, a general of the Adilshahi government of Bijapur and the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, attacked Pandharpur and Tuljapur, the holy pilgrimage sites of the Marathas, dominated by Shivaji, and started torturing the people. he/she hoped that after hearing the news of atrocities, Shivaji would come down from the fort built on the mountain and come down to the plains. But Shivaji did not come down. In such a situation, Afzal Khan then sent a message of meeting, to which Shivaji agreed.

On November 10, 1659, Shivaji met Afzal Khan, a general of Aurangzeb, at Machi in Pratapgarh. But, during the embrace, he/she betrayed Shivaji and grabbed him/her with his/her iron hands and tried to insert the dagger into his/her ribs. But, this could not happen because of the jacket. Then Shivaji also quickly tore open Khan’s stomach with his/her hidden sword. After this, Shivaji’s army hiding in the forest killed Khan’s army.

Shaista Khan’s fingers cut off

Seeing Deccan slipping out of his/her hands, Aurangzeb made his/her maternal uncle Shaista Khan its governor. Shaista Khan knew the strength of Shivaji. Shaista Khan reached Poona with an army of 1.5 lakh soldiers and continued plundering Maval for three consecutive years. Seeing this, one day Shivaji attacked Shaista Khan, in which four of Shaista Khan’s fingers were cut off.

Treaty of Purandar and detention in Agra Fort

Aurangzeb remains very tense about Shivaji’s increasing dominance in the Deccan. When his/her generals could not do any harm to Shivaji, he/she sent a proposal for a treaty to Shivaji. The Treaty of Purandar was signed on June 11, 1665, according to which Shivaji had to hand over 23 forts to the Mughals. This treaty was signed between Maratha Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Rajput ruler Jai Singh I, the commander of the Mughal Empire. After this, he/she was called to Agra Fort, where when Shivaji expressed his/her displeasure in the full court on not getting respect, Aurangzeb put him/her under house arrest.

Shivaji snatched the forts from the Mughals

When Aurangzeb imprisoned Shivaji by deceit, he/she thought of killing him/her. However, on August 17, 1666, Shivaji and Sambhaji managed to escape from Aurangzeb’s fort in a fruit basket. After this, in the year 1668, another treaty was signed between Shivaji and the Mughals. Then in 1670, Shivaji badly defeated the Mughal army near Surat. The forts that Shivaji had given to the Mughals under the Treaty of Purandar were captured again by Shivaji only after 4 years.

When Shivaji Maharaj became the ruler of Marathas

The coronation of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj took place in Raigarh on June 6, 1674. On this day he/she was declared the king of the Marathas under the leadership of Gagabhatta, a Pandit from Kashi. Shivaji Maharaj had set the goal of establishing Swaraj at the age of 16. This was the first Hindu empire in South India after the fall of Vijayanagara, after the establishment of which Shivaji Maharaj had declared Hindavi Swaraj. Seeing the increasing use of Persian, Shivaji also ordered to promote the use of Marathi and Sanskrit in courts and administration.
