Tie Breaker Rule: India is preparing to organize another big tournament in the year 2023. Odisha will host the Men’s Hockey World Cup in the new year. This most prestigious hockey tournament will be played from January 13 to January 29 in Bhubaneswar and Rourkela in Odisha. Top 16 teams of the world including India will participate in this tournament. All the teams are divided into four groups. All the teams participating in the Hockey World Cup are divided into four groups. Each group includes 4-4 teams. India is in Pool D in which the other teams are Wales, Spain and England. Out of these, the top teams in their group will qualify for the quarter-finals.

Pool A: Australia, South Africa, France, Argentina

Pool B: Belgium, Japan, Korea, Germany

Pool C: Netherlands, Chile, Malaysia, New Zealand

Pool D: India, Wales, Spain, England

What is tie-breaker rule?

The top team in each group will automatically qualify for the quarter-finals. Each team will be awarded 2 points for each win in the pool stage. If the match remains a draw, then both the teams will be given one point each. Apart from this, if two teams have the same number of points in the table points, then the ranking of the teams in the group stage will be determined through the tie-breaker rule.

This is how tie-breaker is understood

If both teams have the same number of points, the team with the most wins in the group will rank higher. If both the teams have the same number of points and matches played, then goal difference and goal difference will be considered. The team whose goal difference is better will get higher rank. If all these conditions are equal then the team scoring the most goals will get the higher rank. If the number of goals is also equal for both the teams, then the higher rank will be given to the team based on the results of the matches played between the two teams.
