What is the difference between frigate and destroyer? Preparation for commission in Navy

New Delhi: The Indian Navy will get the first guided missile frigate of the Nilgiri class, Nilgiri, this year. It weighs 6670 tonnes and is fitted with eight BrahMos missiles. Along with this, the first guided missile frigate of the third batch of Talwar class being built in Russia will also join the Navy in the next few months. Along with two frigates, the Navy will also get a destroyer in the next few months. The fourth and last guided missile destroyer of Visakhapatnam class will be commissioned in the Indian Navy. This destroyer weighs 7400 tons and is equipped with BrahMos missiles. Which is a long range missile. It also has 32 Barak missiles, which can hit up to 100 kilometers away. There are also rockets and torpedoes to deal with enemy submarines.

both are warships

Both frigate and destroyer are warships. But there is not only a difference in size between frigates and destroyers, there is also a difference in capacity. The frigate is somewhat smaller in size and the destroyer is about one and a half times larger than the frigate. A frigate is best suited for one type of role and in other roles it is used in a defensive role. Whereas the Destroyer has the ability to play multiple roles simultaneously. It can be used as anti-submarine, anti-ship or even anti-aircraft and it plays its role in all with equal accuracy.

Corvette is smaller in size than frigate. Cannot do multiple tasks with this. For example, if a corvette is anti-submarine then it will not have anti-air capability. If the frigate is anti-submarine, then it can also do anti-air work to some extent, but not in the way a destroyer can do. The Destroyer fits perfectly into all tasks at once. In terms of size, the smallest are corvettes, then frigates and the largest destroyers. The Navy has Kamorta class, Kora class and Khukri class corvettes. Kamorta class corvettes are the first anti-submarine warfare stealth corvettes, designed by the Indian Navy under Project 28. It has 90 percent indigenous content.
