What is surgical menopause? Why do women age rapidly after hysterectomy?

Fibroids are commonly found in the uterus of almost all women. If a woman is not experiencing any pain or symptoms from fibroids, then usually there is no need for treatment. But the fibroids in the uterus of some women become so big that they start having trouble.

If a woman has unbearable pain due to fibroids or there is excessive bleeding during periods, then surgery is advised. When medicines do not help, the woman’s uterus has to be removed.

Many women experience heavy bleeding during menopause. Some women start bleeding even after menopause. This type of abnormal bleeding may be due to cancer. If a woman is above 40, her children have grown up, she no longer wants to plan a baby, then in such a situation, due to any abnormality in the uterus, she is asked to undergo hysterectomy.

Bleeding occurs from the uterus itself during periods. If a woman’s uterus has been removed, she does not have periods. This is called ‘surgical menopause’. But because of the ovaries, its hormones continue to do their work. In women who have cysts or cancer in their ovaries, both their uterus and ovaries are removed. Hormones of such women stop being produced. Due to this, symptoms of menopause like hot flashes, mood swings, insomnia, obesity etc. start appearing early in them.

Due to lack of estrogen hormone in the body, the possibility of cancer and heart diseases increases in such women. The bones of such women weaken quickly, due to which their chances of getting osteoporosis also increases. Such women can be given hormone replacement therapy, which is now called menopausal hormone therapy.

In case of cancer in a woman’s reproductive organs like cervix, uterus, ovary, vagina, the uterus is removed. This surgery is called hysterectomy. Hysterectomy causes harm to a woman’s physical and mental health. When the situation is not under control, the woman’s uterus has to be removed.

Due to hysterectomy, there is a deficiency of estrogen in the woman’s body. This increases the chances of a woman having osteoporosis and heart problems. This also affects the physical relationship of the woman. Due to reduced libido, a woman does not desire to have physical relations.

With increasing age, changes begin to occur in the uterus of women. After the age of 40, many women start suffering from the problem of uterine prolapse. After menopause, due to lack of estrogen hormone in the body, the muscles and tissues of the pelvic floor become weak. Due to this the uterus starts slipping outwards.

Due to this the pressure on the vagina starts increasing. Due to this, women are unable to control urine and they start suffering from bladder leakage. If the condition is serious then the woman is advised to undergo hysterectomy.

Endometriosis is a disease affecting women in which tissue similar to the lining of the uterus starts growing outside the uterus. Due to this, women experience severe pain during periods, while urinating and while having sex. The woman is unable to conceive. If the condition does not come under control with treatment, then the uterus and ovaries have to be removed through hysterectomy.

Endometrial hyperplasia is a condition when the lining of the uterus i.e. endometrium becomes thicker. It cannot be called cancer, but sometimes it can become the cause of cancer. In such a situation hysterectomy is required.

This is a type of bacterial infection. Due to this, infection can occur in the uterus, fallopian tube, ovary and lower abdomen. Usually this infection is caused by sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) like chlamydia or gonorrhea. If pelvic inflammatory disease is not treated on time, the infection increases so much that it even leads to infertility. In some cases, the woman’s uterus even has to be removed.
