What is Low-Lying Placenta? Why is it important to know about it to avoid premature delivery?

The nine months of pregnancy are sensitive for a woman. In this journey, she has to go through different experiences every month. One of these is low lying placenta. Very few women know about it. This problem in pregnancy is as common as it is dangerous. This problem is seen in one or two women out of 200 during pregnancy.

Dr. Vaishali Joshi, Gynecologist and Obstetrician and Consultant at Kokila Ben Ambani Hospital, explains that when the placenta appears in the lower part of the uterus, it is called low line placenta. There is very little chance of the placenta being in its lower position in the ninth month. This is a natural process, for which no medicine or surgery is required for treatment.

What is Low-Lying Placenta?

The placenta develops as the baby grows in the uterus during pregnancy. It gets connected to the woman’s uterine wall. The placenta is the means through which oxygen and nutrients reach the baby’s blood. The placenta comes out after the birth of the child. In women, the placenta remains attached to the bottom of the uterus. As the pregnancy progresses, the placenta also moves upwards, which is also called placentan migration. However, in 2 to 3 percent of women, instead of moving from its place, it remains at the bottom. According to doctors, if the placenta is visible at a distance of less than 200 mm from the cervix, then this condition is called low lying placenta or placenta previa.
