What happened in the Waqf Bill meeting that all the opposition MPs walked out?

New Delhi: Opposition MPs boycotted the meeting of the Joint Committee of Parliament on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill 2024. The opposition alleged that the committee was not working as per the rules. They will talk to the Lok Sabha Speaker about their problems. The committee is seeking suggestions from people across the country regarding the Waqf Bill. Opposition MPs boycotted the meeting alleging that the committee was not working as per the rules. Opposition MPs accused Anwar Maniappadi of making baseless allegations against the Karnataka government and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge. Congress’s Gaurav Gogoi and Imran Masood, DMK’s A Raja, Shiv Sena (UBT)’s Arvind Sawant, AIMIM’s Asaduddin Owaisi, Samajwadi Party’s Mohibullah and Aam Aadmi Party’s Sanjay Singh boycotted the meeting. he/she expressed strong displeasure against the proceedings.

The meeting will be held again today

Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Arvind Sawant told PTI that we have boycotted because the committee is not working with principles and norms. Morally and ideologically they are wrong. In view of this, opposition MPs have decided to meet the Lok Sabha Speaker and convey their concerns over the Waqf Bill. The committee is expected to meet again on Tuesday. In this meeting, oral evidence will be heard from representatives of the Ministry of Minority Affairs.

On September 28, as part of its nationwide consultation exercise on the proposed Waqf (Amendment) Bill 2024, the Joint Parliamentary Committee had held a meeting with various stakeholders in Hyderabad. Speaking at the meeting, JPC chief Jagdambika Pal said that we discussed with the chairman of Chhattisgarh Waqf Board, chairman of Andhra Pradesh Waqf Board. Stakeholders from 42 organizations participated in the discussion. We are in discussion with stakeholders in different cities. From here, we will go to Chennai and then Bangalore. Earlier, we had gone to Ahmedabad and Mumbai. We are also going to Delhi. We have to submit the report before the next Parliament session and we will discuss with as many stakeholders as possible and make a comprehensive report.
