What did the Home Ministry say on the claim that Rahul Gandhi has British citizenship and Indian citizenship?

New Delhi: The issue of British citizenship with Congress MP Rahul Gandhi is gaining momentum. S. Vignesh Shishir, who filed a PIL in the Allahabad High Court to cancel Indian citizenship, has opened a front on this matter. In this matter, the court has sought a report from the Union Home Ministry. S Vignesh Shishir said, ‘This case was heard in the Lucknow bench of Allahabad High Court on 25 November. The Honorable Court asked the Government of India, what action has been taken on the evidence, documents, information, videos and photographs that I have presented related to the foreign citizenship of Rahul Gandhi. The Ministry of Home Affairs of the Government of India responded that action on the matter is ‘in process’ and is under ‘active consideration’. The representative of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Deputy Solicitor General of the Government of India, Suryabhan Pandey made this submission in the court.

Vignesh Shishir said, ‘On October 4 this year, the Government of India had submitted a status report through a letter, in which it was clearly stated that cancellation of Rahul Gandhi’s Indian citizenship is being considered. Subsequently, the Court directed the Government of India to take a final decision on the matter by 19 December and to submit a status report to the Court by that time. The next hearing will be held on December 19.

‘Indian government will soon revoke Rahul’s citizenship’

he/she further said, ‘I have great hope in this matter that the Government of India will soon cancel the Indian citizenship of Rahul Gandhi, because this time there has been a direct communication with the British Government, in which it has been confirmed that Rahul Gandhi’s name will be registered in Britain. Is recorded in the citizenship records of. We have presented these documents before the Allahabad High Court. Apart from this, we also have some confidential evidence, which we have presented in the court, and this makes it clear that Rahul Gandhi is a citizen of Britain. Therefore, we are confident that his/her Indian citizenship should be cancelled.

‘There is no such law in India which provides for dual…’

he/she said, ‘There is no law in India which allows dual citizenship. If a person acquires citizenship of any other country, the Indian citizenship is cancelled. It is clear under the Indian Constitution and the Citizenship Act of 1955 that if a person takes citizenship of another country, his/her Indian citizenship will be cancelled.
