New Delhi : Chief Justice DY Chandrachud once again commented on the issue of workload of judges. Chandrachud said that judges do not wander around even during holidays but remain completely dedicated to their work. he/she emphasized that judges do not get enough time to think or read the law. he/she said that judges are expected to dispose of cases like machines.

Committed to work even during holidays

The Chief Justice was speaking during an event in Mumbai. he/she said that unlike other fields, the workload and complexity of judges increases as they advance in the judiciary. The CJI said that our judges do not wander around or become careless even during holidays, they are fully committed to their work. he/she said that the orders passed by them will define the country for decades, but judges (apart from their work) rarely get time to think about or read the law.

Where is the time to read about law?

The Chief Justice said, do we give enough time to our judges to think or read the law or do you want them to become mere mechanical machines in disposing of cases. Chandrachud said that the number of cases pending in lower courts, High Court and Supreme Court is in crores. Lack of adequate number of judges and infrastructure problems are among the main reasons for this.
During the tenure of CJI Chandrachud, his/her father’s record will be broken, only two Supreme Courts will get 19 judges.
Speaking about the collegium system, the Chief Justice said every institution can be reformed, but this should not lead to the conclusion that there is something fundamentally wrong with it. he/she said that the collegium system is a federal system where responsibility has been given to different levels of both the Central and State governments and the judiciary.

The Chief Justice said that this is a process of communication through discussion, where consensus is reached, but sometimes consensus is not reached, but this is a part of the system. he/she said that we should have the maturity to understand that this shows the strength of our system. he/she said that I wish we were able to build more consensus, but the point of the matter is that this matter is dealt with a lot of maturity at different levels of the judiciary and at different levels of governments.

On the rise of social media, the Chief Justice said that it is good for the society. Chandrachud said, I believe that the entire world of justice has changed because of social media. Judges must be very careful about what they say, use appropriate language. The Chief Justice said, “I still feel that the rise of social media is good for the society, because it enables users to reach a larger section of the society.” Chief Justice DY Chandrachud is scheduled to retire on November 10. After that Justice Sanjeev Khanna will take charge of the highest judicial post of the country.
