What are combat arms and what are support arms in the army? Understand the whole thing here

New Delhi: Indian Army can be divided into two parts. Arms and Services. There are two types of arms in arms, combat arms and support arms. Infantry, mechanized infantry and armored corps are called combat arms. Artillery, Engineers, Signals, Air Defense and Aviation are called support arms.

Support arms help combat arms

The support arms of the Army help the combat arms in war. Combat Arms combat the enemy in battle. The function of artillery is to provide support fire to the combat arms. Similarly, engineers provide mobility to the combat arm. That is, they clear mines, build bridges and remove obstacles from their path. They also create obstacles in the path of the enemy to stop him/her from moving forward. Signals transmit messages, both physically and through wireless communication. The Air Defense Corps provides support to the arms against enemy air attacks. The Aviation Corps maintains aerial surveillance and helps commanders move quickly from one place to another in the field.

Services are for logistical support

Apart from this, there are services for logistical support in the army. This mainly includes Army Service Corps, Army Ordnance Corps, Corps of Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (EME) and Army Medical Corps. Apart from this, Intelligence Corps, Corps of Military Police, Army Education Corps, Remount and Veterinary Corps, Army Dental Corps, Legal Department (JAG) are also part of the Army.

Army Service Corps does the work of supply

Army service does the work of core supply. It buys fuel and food supplies, stores them and delivers them wherever they are needed. The Army Ordnance Corps procures, stores, and distributes weapon systems, weapons, ammunition, vehicles, military equipment, and clothing. EME i.e. Corps of Electrical and Mechanical Engineers repairs and maintains all the large and small electrical, electronic and mechanical devices used by the Army. The Army Medical Corps provides medical cover to the entire Army.

Army Chief is from Infantry Regiment

Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi was commissioned into the 18th Battalion of the Jammu and Kashmir Rifles of the Army. Jammu and Kashmir Rifles is one of the infantry regiments of the Army. Infantry regiment is a combat arm. Officers who are from the combat arms of the Army or those officers from the support arms who are shifted to the General cadre while being Brigadier, have the basic qualification to become Army Chief. Earlier, according to the ranking, the officers of support arms had to fill the choice of going to the general cadre while being brigadiers and on getting approved, they were shifted to the general cadre. Now senior leaders of the Army nominate officers for the general cadre as per their profile and qualifications.
