At least three people, including a firefighter and a child, were seriously injured in a massive fire that broke out at a slum in northern West Bengal’s Siliguri city on Saturday evening. Fire officials gave this information.
Hundreds of houses and shops are expected to be gutted in the fire that broke out at around 8 pm in Rana Basti of Ward No. 18 of the city. After several hours of effort, the fire could be brought under control by eight fire tenders.
Union Minister of State for Education Subhash Sarkar who was in the city at the time of the incident. He visited the spot and took stock of the situation. Police Commissioner Akhilesh Chaturvedi said that the cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained. Gudiya Das, a local resident, said that heavy smoke was seen rising from a part of the slum and the fire department was informed soon after.
