Warner’s record against India was overlooked in the glare of Afghanistan’s victory…

New Delhi. ‘Giant Killer’ Afghanistan’s spectacular win over Australia has made the race for the Super 8 of Group 1 of the T20 World Cup 2024 interesting. With this win, the Afghan team has maintained its claim to enter the semi-finals while Australia’s path has become difficult. The Australian team has to face Team India in their next match today at Grass Islet, while Afghanistan will face Bangladesh on June 25.

If Australia loses to the Indian team and Afghanistan defeats Bangladesh, then the Afghan team will make it to the final four. If Australia wins against India and Afghanistan wins against Bangladesh, then the top three teams will have 4 points each and the two teams making it to the semi-finals will be decided on the basis of net run rate. However, Team India’s entry into the final four is almost certain. If India wins the match and Afghanistan loses to Bangladesh, then the other three teams except India will have two points each and the second team reaching the semi-finals will again be decided on the basis of net run rate.

In the Afghanistan-Australia match on Sunday, amidst the victory of Rashid Khan’s team and the dazzling second consecutive hat-trick of Pat Cummins, a big record of David Warner did not come into discussion. This record is not of batting or bowling, but of taking the most catches in the T20 World Cup. In cricket, fielding usually does not get much importance as compared to batting and bowling, but it is also an important aspect of the game. A great catch or runout in a match sometimes changes the result of the match in favor of one team over the other.

In the match, Warner (David Warner) caught Rahmanullah Gurbaz off Stoinis’s ball during Afghanistan’s innings and became the fielder to take the most catches in the T20 World Cup. This was Warner’s 24th catch in his/her 40th match. With this, he/she surpassed South Africa’s AB de Villiers’ record of 23 catches as a fielder. De Villiers had taken 23 catches in 30 matches of the T20 World Cup as a fielder.

Warner competes with Maxwell in the race of catches, Rohit is at fourth place
In the race of most catches, Warner is now facing competition from his/her own countryman Glenn Maxwell. In Sunday’s match, Maxwell also caught the catch of Gulbadin Naib which was his/her 23rd catch in the T20 World Cup. With this catch, ‘Maxie’ is now equal to de Villiers’ 23 catches. The upcoming matches of the Australian team will decide who becomes the ‘winner’ in this competition of catches between Warner and Maxwell. This is Warner’s last cricket tournament and after this he/she has announced to retire completely from international cricket.

Warner can touch a big ‘landmark’ in the match against India
Warner, who has taken the most catches in the T20 World Cup, can achieve another feat in the match against Team India. Warner has so far scored 978 runs in 40 matches of this tournament, remaining unbeaten three times. As soon as he/she scores 22 runs in the match against Team India, he/she will become the fourth batsman to touch the 1000 run mark in the T20 World Cup. So far, only India’s Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma and Sri Lanka’s Mahela Jayawardene have scored more than a thousand runs in the T20 World Cup. Warner will be desperate to achieve this feat before retirement.

Will Maxwell, Markram break the record for most catches in an edition?

Maxwell and Markram also have a chance to break the record for most catches as a fielder in a T20 World Cup. Both Australia and South Africa are in the Super 8. The record for most catches in any edition of the T20 World Cup is held by Sri Lanka’s Dasun Shanaka, who took 9 catches in the 2022 T20 World Cup. Both of them have a chance to equal or break Shanaka’s record. Australia’s Michael Hussey and David Warner (2010) and Scotland’s Calum MacLeod and Australia’s Steve Smith (2021) have taken eight catches each.
