Want to study in New Zealand in 2025? Know the new post study work visa rules

New Zealand PSWV: Students studying in New Zealand also get a chance to work in the country. Foreign students can work in the country for three years after studies through ‘Post Study Work Visa’ (PSWV). However, it is decided on the basis of qualification that who will get PSWV for how much time. Changes have also been made in the PSWV rules in the country from 2025. The new changes will also be applicable to those Indian students who are going to study in the country from next year.
Under the new rules, those doing Masters degree after Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip) will also be able to get PSWV. International students are going to benefit from this. After the new rules, new avenues will open for Indian students to work in New Zealand after studies. Most of the students from China and India come to study in New Zealand. More than 15,000 Indian students are studying in New Zealand. Many top universities of the world are also present in this country.

What were the old rules?

In New Zealand, if a student did a 30-week Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip) and then went straight to a Masters, he/she or she would not get a PSWV. The Masters program also required 30 weeks of study. Now such students can apply for PSWV. They just have to show that they have taken admission in the Masters programme.

What are the rules of PSWV?

There are some rules for applying for PSWV. You must have a New Zealand recognized degree. You must be studying full-time in New Zealand and you must apply within the deadline. Let’s say you completed a degree that could get you a PSWV. After that you take another higher degree for which PSWV is not available (because you did not study for it for long enough). In such a situation also you can apply for PSWV.

You must apply within 12 months of the expiry of your first student visa. These changes give students more freedom in choosing the path of their studies. This ensures that they can work after completing their studies. If you are seeking a three-year PSWV, you will be required to complete a minimum of 30 weeks of full-time study in a Masters programme.
