LMIA is a type of document that the Canadian government asks for before issuing work permits for certain companies. This document is issued by Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC). On the basis of LMIA, a work permit is issued for a company only if the result of the document is “positive” or “neutral”.

Who is eligible for a work permit without LMIA?

To obtain a work permit under the innovation stream, applicants must fulfil certain conditions:

• They must have a job offer from a company involved in the Global Hypergrowth Project (GHP).
• They must have a job offer in a high-skilled occupation, including positions in National Occupational Classification (NOC) Training, Education, Experience, and Responsibilities (TEER) category 0, 1, 2, or 3.
• They must have the required education and experience as specified in the Employment Requirements section of the NOC for the job they wish to work for.

This stream is for eligible applicants who are living in Canada and are living outside the country. If the job for which the applicants have been hired falls under TEER category 0 or 1 of the NOC, then the process of applying for their work permit can also be expedited.
