For the uninitiated, the web series ‘IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack’ stars Vijay Varma in the lead role. It is based on the true events of the 1999 Indian passenger flight that was hijacked by a terrorist group in Pakistan. Vijay Varma’s web series created a huge controversy as the makers have named the terrorists as ‘Bhola’ and ‘Shankar’. While the show is based on the shocking hijack incident, netizens pointed out how the terrorists were identified as having changed names and accused director Anbhuv Sinha of tampering with facts. Let us tell you that the 1999 incident was the longest hijacking in the history of India.

The terrorists demanded the release of terrorists they held in India in exchange for the passengers on board the flight. After the incident, it was revealed that the five hijackers were identified as Ibrahim Athar, Shahid Akhtar Syed, Sunny Ahmad Qazi, Zahoor Mistry and Shakir and that they belonged to a Pakistan-based terrorist group.

But in the show, the terrorists were identified as ‘Bhola’ and ‘Shankar’. This hurt netizens on social media platform X. Someone said that if terrorism has no name, then why did they change the name? Someone also shared how cinematic people are the best in whitewashing. One user wrote – The terrorists were named ‘Shankar’ and ‘Bhola’. If terrorism had no religion, then why did they change the name brother?
