VIDEO: Do you know the name of the Indian who saved the follow-on by hitting 4 consecutive sixes?

New Delhi. India recently faced a bad defeat against Australia. In one match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series, India even had to struggle to save the follow-on. Jasprit Bumrah and Akash Deep saved India from this embarrassment with great difficulty. Both these batsmen fought on the pitch for about an hour. But do you know that a few years ago, in a similar situation, the legendary Kapil Dev had avoided the follow-on by hitting four consecutive sixes.

This was in 1990, when there was a match between India and England at Lord’s. In this match, England declared their innings by scoring 653/4 runs, thanks to the triple century of Graham Gooch (333). India had to score at least 454 runs to save the follow-on, but lost 9 wickets within 430 runs. Now India had to score 24 runs to avoid follow on. The great Kapil Dev was standing at the crease and Narendra Hirwani had come to support him/her.

If Kohli retires, India will suffer the most! I would have fought for them, who said this?

This was the time when T20 cricket was a very distant thing. If follow-on was to be avoided, attacking cricket was never thought of. But Kapil Dev was known for his/her contortions. he/she was convinced that it would be difficult to save the follow-on while playing defensively with Narendra Hirwani. As a result, he/she decided to attack. When off-spinner Edward Hemmings came in front of him/her, he/she defended the first two balls. After this he/she hit sixes on the next 4 balls. As soon as he/she hit the fourth six, Kapil Dev picked up the bat and sent a message to the dressing room that he/she had done his/her job. Narendra Hirwani was out in the very next over. In this way India’s innings ended at 454 runs only.

However, despite saving the follow-on, India could not save the match. After taking a lead of 199 runs, England declared the second innings at 123 runs for 4 wickets. In this way India got the target of 472 runs to win. This target was no less than impossible on a broken pitch on the fifth day of the match. As a result, the Indians surrendered and the entire team was out after scoring 224 runs. In this way India lost this match by 247 runs.
