Veer Savarkar College: Who was Veer Savarkar? Why is there an uproar over building a college in their name?

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is going to launch several projects in Delhi on Friday, January 3. These will also include laying the foundation stone of Veer Savarkar College in Najafgarh. The Prime Minister is going to lay the foundation stone of three new projects worth more than Rs 600 crore in Delhi University. These projects include construction of an academic building in the Western Campus at Dwarka, Delhi, an academic building in the Eastern Campus at Surajmal Vihar in East Delhi and the construction of state-of-the-art Veer Savarkar College at Roshanpura, Najafgarh.

The PMO gave this information in a release on Thursday, January 2. The National Students Union of India (NSUI) of the college named after Veer Savarkar wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday. In this letter, he/she demanded to name a college under Delhi University after the late former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh.

NSUI said in a letter to PM Modi, ‘You are going to inaugurate a college in the name of Veer Savarkar under Delhi University. NSUI strongly demands that this institute should be named after former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh. his/her recent demise has created a huge void, and the most fitting tribute to his/her legacy would be to dedicate a premier educational institution in his/her name.’

The matter is that Veer Savarkar is not considered an ideal patriot among the opposition and a section. There are allegations that he/she had apologized to the British government after being punished after protesting against the British and hence he/she cannot be called an ideal patriot. Nor does he/she have such a place in history that he/she could be called an ideal patriot and a college should be built in his/her name.

he/she further said that Dr Singh has made ‘significant contributions’ which include the establishment of central universities like IIM, IIT, AIIMS and a network of central universities across India. he/she also implemented the Right to Education Act, 2009. These initiatives revolutionized the education system of the country, benefiting millions of people.
