Understand which state supported whom in the Lok Sabha elections through pictures and figures

New Delhi : The results of the Lok Sabha elections have surprised everyone. These election results were contrary to the expectations of the NDA as well as the India Alliance. The results of the Lok Sabha elections have overturned the predictions of all exit polls. The results made it clear that once again the NDA government will be formed at the center. However, the India Alliance gave a big blow to the BJP by performing brilliantly in politically very important Uttar Pradesh. In this way, the BJP failed to get a majority on its own. Compared to 2019, BJP’s seats decreased by 63. The party came down from 303 seats last time to 240. This was also a big setback for the BJP because the party had set a target of ‘Abki Baar, 400 Paar’. At the same time, Congress won 99 seats this time as compared to 52 seats. Once again, BJP could not open its account in Tamil Nadu. Mamata Banerjee once again did not let the BJP succeed in West Bengal. Let’s take a look at which party won in which state.

SP became champion in UP

The country’s largest state gave the BJP its biggest jolt in the Lok Sabha elections. The saffron double engine of Modi and Yogi derailed in front of the India Bloc duo of Akhilesh Yadav and Rahul Gandhi. With 37 seats, the Samajwadi Party emerged as the star of the Congress-led alliance. The party put up its best Lok Sabha performance. The BJP, which was seen as the heavy favourite, was reduced to 33 seats. The NDA came down to 36 from 64 (BJP 62) in 2019. Its vote share fell from nearly 50% to around 43%, while that of the SP jumped from 18% in 2019 to 33.5%. The Congress won six seats (its vote share increased from 6.5% to nearly 10%).

The question of ‘real Shiv Sena, real NCP’ has been resolved by the people. Uddhav Thackeray and Sharad Pawar have emerged from the political turmoil that split their parties. Thackeray stepped down as CM and Pawar was ousted from the NCP by nephew Ajit. With the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) winning 29 of the 48 seats in the state, Pawar and Uddhav have not only re-established themselves as mass leaders but also got a boost ahead of the assembly elections this October. However, the biggest gainer has been the Congress, which has grown from one seat in 2019 to 13. The Congress has emerged as the single largest party.

DMK’s threat remains intact

DMK's threat remains intact

The DMK won everything. MK Stalin’s popularity soared in national politics as he/she led the India Bloc to a clean sweep. This was a better performance than the 38 out of 39 seats won by the DMK alliance in 2019. The regional and caste dynamics of the alliance and the DMK government’s massive welfare measures outperformed the opposition – regional rivals ADMK and the BJP. The defeat of state BJP chief K Annamalai was a big reason for the defeat of the ADMK, which was an ally of the BJP, and especially Edappadi K Palaniswami. Now a discussion is gaining momentum whether the ADMK and the BJP will continue to contest as rivals in future elections.

With the BJP getting just 12 seats in West Bengal, the state’s voters dealt a blow to the saffron party as well as election experts. The script for the Lok Sabha election was similar to that of the 2021 assembly elections. The BJP’s loss was Trinamool’s gain. As the BJP came down from its 2019 mark of 18 seats, Mamata Banerjee’s party increased its tally from 22 in 2019 to 29. Women, minorities and tribal voters contributed to Trinamool’s performance, while the party retained its urban base. The BJP’s Sandeshkhali pitch did not work, nor did the CAA make any impact.

Congress is strong in Kerala

Congress is strong in Kerala

Rahul Gandhi won easily in Wayanad. The Congress-led UDF won 18 seats and the CPM 1 seat. However, Kerala also brought smiles to the BJP, which won a seat here for the first time. In Kerala’s Thrissur, actor Suresh Gopi made it a historic day for the saffron camp. The Thiruvananthapuram battle, one of the most high-profile in these Lok Sabha elections – between Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar and senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor – went on till the end. Tharoor won by 15,000 votes.

Seats divided in Punjab

Seats divided in Punjab

All 13 seats in Punjab witnessed a fractured mandate in multi-cornered contests as ruling party AAP increased its tally to 3. Congress won 7 seats. Congress and AAP were not in alliance here. Jailed pro-Khalistan Sikh preacher Amritpal Singh (Ind) won by nearly 2 lakh votes in Khadoor Sahib, the highest margin in the state. Sarabjit Singh, son of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s assassin Beant Singh, won by over 70,000 votes in Faridkot.

Gujarat: Congress successful in stopping the hat-trick of clean sweep

Gujarat: Congress successful in stopping the hat-trick of clean sweep

The Congress’s only win ended a decade-long losing streak in Banaskantha. The victory prevented the BJP from making a hat-trick of clean sweeps. However, the rest of the state reposed unwavering faith in Modi. The BJP won 25 of the 26 seats. Union Home Minister Amit Shah rewrote his/her 2019 election victory margin record of 5.6 lakh by registering a stunning victory in Gandhinagar by a margin of over 7.4 lakh. In Navsari, state BJP chief C R Patil bettered his/her 2019 record.

Spectacular victory in Madhya Pradesh

Spectacular victory in Madhya Pradesh

Madhya Pradesh is one state the BJP need not worry about. Carrying the momentum ahead for the 2023 assembly elections, the BJP swept all 29 seats, finally breaking into the Congress bastion of Chhindwara. The political fortunes of the Nath family were at stake in their impregnable bastion for four decades. The 29-0 scoreline was also a boost for CM Mohan Yadav, who has been catapulted from the back bench of the state BJP to the top post

BJP’s dominance continues in Chhattisgarh

BJP's dominance continues in Chhattisgarh

In Chhattisgarh, BJP continues to dominate the Lok Sabha. In 2019, when Congress was deprived of victory in the assembly elections, BJP won 9 seats. This time it has performed better by winning 10 seats. This is important for its numbers at the national level. This result has also put first-time Chief Minister Vishnu Dev Sai in a strong position, who is the first tribal to hold this post.

BJP on top in Uttarakhand, Himachal

BJP on top in Uttarakhand, Himachal

There was no surprise in Uttarakhand when the BJP won all five seats by big margins for the third time in a row. Former CM Trivendra Singh Rawat, contesting his/her first Lok Sabha election, easily won Haridwar. With this, the Congress made a hat-trick of clean sweep in Himachal Pradesh. Actress Kangana Ranaut emerged victorious in Mandi. She defeated Congress MLA Vikramaditya Singh. This was a setback for Himachal Pradesh Congress President Pratibha Singh.

Biggest win outside your hometown

Biggest win outside your hometown

This was the BJP’s biggest win outside its strongholds in these general elections as the party defeated the BJD to win 20 seats, up from just 8 in 2019. Naveen Patnaik’s party, which has been ruling for five consecutive terms and had won 12 seats in 2019, was wiped out due to anti-incumbency. The Congress too performed dismally, winning just one seat.

Spring in Bihar for NDA

Spring in Bihar for NDA

The NDA performed well in Bihar. The ruling alliance won 30 seats here. CM Nitish Kumar’s JD(U) took the lead by winning 12 seats. BJP won 12 and Chirag Paswan’s LJP(RV) won five seats. Jitan Ram Manjhi won from Gaya. The NDA had won 39 seats in 2019. India Block took the lead, but the massive crowds seen at Tejashwi Yadav’s rallies did not translate into votes for the RJD. RJD won just 4 seats. Congress, which was its alliance partner, won 3 seats. It seems that Modi’s repeated reminders about RJD’s ‘jungle raj’ worked.

Congress performed better in Rajasthan

Congress performed better in Rajasthan

The Congress ended a decade-long Lok Sabha seat drought with an impressive performance. It snatched 11 seats (3 with allies) in a state where the BJP had made a clean sweep twice in 2014 and 2019. The BJP had recently won the assembly elections. Its experiment of forging its first alliance in the state with parties like the RLP, BAP and CPM was successful – in fact, BAP’s Raj Kumar Roat won by over 2 lakh votes in Banswara, the place where the Prime Minister had delivered the ‘mangalsutra’ speech after the first phase of polling. The absence of strong state-level leadership and party stalwart Vasundhara Raje hurt the BJP.

Congress gains in Karnataka, BJP loses

Congress gains in Karnataka, BJP loses

Congress’ gain proved to be BJP’s loss. Karnataka has seen a repeat of the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, when Modi became PM. Ten years later, the BJP has again won 17 seats. With ally Janata Dal (S) winning 2 more, the NDA’s tally has gone up to 19. However, this is a drop of 8 seats from the NDA’s 2019 tally. Ruling party Congress won nine seats, a huge improvement from its 1 seat in 2019. Among the major contestants, former PM HD Devegowda’s son-in-law C N Manjunath won, while his/her grandson Prajwal Revanna – who is accused of sexual assault – lost.

NDA got 9 out of 14 seats

In Jharkhand, NDA got nine out of 14 seats. Of these, BJP won eight and its alliance partner AJSU P won one seat. Indo-Pak alliance improved its performance and increased its number of seats from two to five. Expressing displeasure over ED action against former Chief Minister Hemant Soren, all the tribal reserved seats went with Indo-Pak. JMM successfully took advantage of tribal sentiments against the central government which refused to give a separate Sarna code in the census register.

The last minute deal worked

The last minute deal worked

The last minute electoral pact with the BJP and return to the NDA brought a big victory for the TDP. It also confirmed the fact that whenever the TDP contests elections in alliance with other parties, it wins big. In fact, TDP president and CM candidate N Chandrababu Naidu has also emerged as the kingmaker for the NDA, while the BJP has remained far from the majority. YSRCP, which contested alone, won 4 seats, while the TDP and its allies won 21 seats. Of these, the BJP won three and the Jana Sena won two seats, which is the first victory of the Jana Sena in Parliament.

Congress defeated NDA

Congress defeated NDA

The NDA’s tally in the Northeast was down by 3 seats from 2019, in stark contrast to the predictions of every exit poll. The BJP lost four of the 17 seats it contested – 2 in Assam and one each in Manipur and Mizoram. The NDA’s tally fell from 18 in 2019 to 15. The Congress won 7 seats, including 3 in Assam, surpassing its 2019 tally of 4. The BJP’s biggest defeat came in conflict-hit Manipur, where it was rejected in the Meitei-dominated Imphal Valley.
