This journey related to meditation was not so easy. According to Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, when he/she traveled around the world teaching meditation and yoga a few decades ago, many people considered it ‘weird and taboo’. Today times have changed. On Saturday, he/she will become the first spiritual leader to address the first ‘World Meditation Day’ at the United Nations. This will be the biggest meditation session ever, through which lakhs of people will come together. It aims to bring together people from all walks of life and promote the importance of meditation to achieve personal well-being and social change.

Effective in reducing stress and depression

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar took meditation and Sudarshan Kriya to those places surrounded by conflict. These also include places like Kosovo, Colombia and Lebanon. These breathing techniques have helped the Yazidi community in Syria overcome the trauma of the genocide and reduce tensions between communities in Iraq. This has given hope to people like Ibrahim who have suffered the pain of losing their loved ones to the bullets of ISIS terrorists. Ibrahim’s two brothers were murdered by ISIS.

Later, Ibrahim was looked after by teachers from the Art of Living. Researchers at the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences have found that meditation techniques have similar effects to the anti-depressant drug Imipramine. Similarly, Delhi AIIMS reported that meditation sessions reduced serum cortisol levels, an indicator of stress.
