UN has become a hostage of the past…Jaishankar strongly advocated for reform of the Security Council.

New Delhi : India has reiterated its demand for urgent reforms in international decision-making structures, especially the expansion of the UN Security Council. The reason for India’s insistence is that the Global South gets its proper representation. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said at the G-20 Foreign Ministers’ meeting in New York that fair representation of countries from Asia, Africa and South America in both the permanent and elected categories of the reformed UNSC is a ‘special imperative’.

UN becomes hostage of the past

The Foreign Minister said that the countries of the Global South cannot be made ‘non-cooperative’. Jaishankar said that today the world has developed into a smart, interconnected and multipolar region. Since the establishment of the United Nations, the number of its members has increased four times. Yet the United Nations remains hostage to the past. As a result, the Security Council struggles to fulfill its mandate of maintaining international peace and stability, he/she said.

Global South should get voice

Jaishankar said increasing the representation of the Global South in the current 15-member permanent category of the UNSC is important to ensure that the body is representative, credible and effective. At the event organized at the United Nations Headquarters, he/she said that Asia, Africa and South America should be given their legitimate voice. Jaishankar said India remains steadfast in its commitment to rules-based, open, inclusive and transparent multilateral trading systems, with the World Trade Organization at its core.
