UK Graduate Visa Process: It is everyone’s dream to study in Britain, that is why thousands of Indian students move to this country every year. More than one lakh students are currently studying in Britain. The best thing about going to study here is that even after the course is over, students do not have to leave the country, rather they are given job opportunities. In fact, students who complete their studies in Britain get a two-year graduate visa, which allows them to stay in the country.
When applying for a graduate visa, the Indian student must be present in the UK and must also hold a student visa. You can study with a graduate visa only if your chosen course is not eligible for a student visa. If your course is eligible for a student visa, you can extend your student visa instead. What is the eligibility criteria?

  • The student must be in Britain.
  • The student’s current visa must be a student visa or Tier 4 (General) student visa.
  • The student must have completed a Bachelor’s degree, Postgraduate degree or any other eligible course of at least the prescribed duration from a UK university or college.
  • The student’s college or university must have informed the Home Office about successful completion of his/her/her course.

How long can I stay in the UK on a graduate visa?

A graduate visa is valid for a minimum of 2 years. If the applicant has obtained a PhD or doctoral qualification, it remains valid for 3 years. Visa issuance starts from the day the application is accepted. Graduate visas cannot be extended. However, other visas such as the Skilled Worker Visa can be obtained to stay in the UK for a longer period of time.

How to apply?

Your partner and children also have the opportunity to apply to stay if they are eligible. The applicant will have to prove his/her/her identity during the application process. For this, the applicant will have to scan his/her Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) with the ‘UK Immigration: ID Check’ app. Applicants must log in to their existing UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) account or create a new account.

If the applicant is not able to scan his/her/her BRP or passport from the app, he/she/she will have to visit a UK Visa and Citizenship Application Services (UKVCAS) center and submit his/her/her fingerprints and photograph. Complete information will be given to the applicant while applying. If an appointment is required, the center may retain the applicant’s passport and documents for a period of time. Applicants cannot travel outside the UK, Ireland, Channel Islands or Isle of Man during the application process. Doing so will result in the application being cancelled.

How much time does the decision on visa take and how much is the fee?

After applying online, proving your identity, and submitting documents, you usually receive a decision on your visa within 8 weeks. During this period, you will have to stay in Britain only. For graduate visa, an application fee of £822 has to be paid. A healthcare surcharge of £1035 also has to be paid. Through this visa one can get employed, search for a job, start one’s own business.
