UGC has clarified in the guidelines that following these guidelines made for plastic-free campus is compulsory. Its report will also have to be sent to UGC.

Use of this type of plastic is very harmful for the environment and is also dangerous for people’s health. It is seen that single use plastic is being used on a large scale in the canteens and hostels of universities and colleges and it is necessary to stop it now.

UGC has said that single use plastics have now become a big challenge for the waste management system in cities. The problem of increasing pollution is also becoming serious. The government has banned single use plastic and universities will also have to take responsibility in this direction. The impact of awareness campaigns run by university-college students is visible on a large scale. Guidelines regarding this are issued by UGC from time to time. Universities can also take help of institutions and local administration for awareness campaign against plastic.

Why is single use plastic dangerous?

Under the Swachh Bharat Mission, an awareness campaign is being run across the country to ban and avoid using single use plastic (SUP). All states are contributing in their own way. Bag ATM was also used in Maharashtra. Use of single use plastic plays a big role in increasing the problem of pollution. This type of plastic cannot be reused. In such a situation, people often try to destroy it by burying it in the ground or by burning it, which is also a serious threat to air, water and land pollution.
