‘U’ in UPS means Modi government’s U-turn, Kharge’s taunt on ‘Unified Pension Scheme’


New Delhi: Modi government has given a big relief to the government employees by announcing ‘Unified Pension Scheme’. On the other hand, the political temperature of the country has increased regarding this pension scheme. Congress has taken a dig at the Modi government regarding the ‘Unified Pension Scheme’. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge said that ‘U’ in UPS means U-turn of Modi government. Along with this, while counting the decisions withdrawn so far in the third term of Modi government, he/she said that after June 4, the power of the people has dominated the arrogance of the power of the Prime Minister. The Congress President posted on X and wrote, ‘U’ in UPS means U-turn of Modi government! After June 4, the power of the people has dominated the arrogance of the power of the Prime Minister.’ Kharge further wrote, ‘Rollback in the budget regarding long term capital gain/indexation, sending the Waqf bill to JPC, withdrawing the Broadcast Bill, rollback of lateral entry are examples of this. We will continue to ensure accountability and protect 140 crore Indians from this autocratic government.

Know about ‘Unified Pension Scheme’

Central government employees will be given the option to choose between NPS and UPS. Central government NPS subscribers will also be given the option to switch to UPS. Giving information about the new scheme, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said, ‘Government employees had demanded some changes in the new pension scheme. For this, PM Modi constituted a committee headed by Cabinet Secretary T.V. Somanathan. This committee held more than 100 meetings with various organizations and almost all the states and this pension scheme has been prepared on the basis of these recommendations.’ State governments will also be given the option to choose this scheme. If the state governments opt for UPS, the number of beneficiaries will be around 90 lakh. According to the government, the arrears will cost Rs 800 crore. The annual cost increase in the first year will be around Rs 6,250 crore. The scheme will be effective from April 1, 2025.

What did PM Modi say?

The Union Cabinet headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday approved the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS) for government employees. This scheme will benefit about 23 lakh central government employees. PM Modi posted on social media platform X and said, ‘We are proud of all government employees who work hard for the progress of the country. The Unified Pension Scheme (UPS) will ensure dignity and financial security of these employees. This step reflects our government’s commitment to their welfare and secure future.’
