Two batsmen got out 3 times on the first ball of a Test, one was the ‘victim’ of the same bowler each time


New Delhi. In any format of cricket, only a batsman knows the pain of getting out on 0. If a batsman gets out on his/her first ball or the first ball of the match, then this sorrow increases further. In international cricket, many batsmen have made ‘Golden Duck’ by getting out on their first ball. There are some batsmen who have lost their wicket on the first ball of the match. Talking about Test cricket, till now more than two and a half dozen batsmen have been out on the first ball of the match. Out of these, Jimmy Cook of South Africa, Leon Gerrick of West Indies and Abdul Malik of Afghanistan have had to face shame by getting out on the first ball of their debut Test. There are two batsmen in world cricket who have lost their wicket on the first ball of the match more than twice in Tests.

India’s Sunil Gavaskar and Bangladesh’s Hannan Sarkar have been out on the first ball of the match 3 times in Test cricket. Out of these, Gavaskar is considered one of the best openers in world cricket. Sunny was the first to break Don Bradman’s record of 29 centuries and score 10,000 runs in Test cricket. The case of Bangladesh’s Hannan is amazing. he/she has been out on the first ball in a Test against the same team all three times. Not only this, all three times he/she has become the ‘victim’ of the same bowler. In cricket history, England’s Archie MacLaren was the first to be out on the first ball in the Melbourne Test against Australia in 1894. he/she was made the victim by fast bowler Arthur Cunningham.

‘Sunny’ is the first batsman to get out on the first ball thrice
Popularly known as ‘Sunny’, Gavaskar became the first batsman to be out three times in Test cricket. he/she was first dismissed by England’s Geoff Arnold on the first ball of the 1974 Birmingham Test. Sunny’s catch was taken by wicketkeeper Alan Knott. After this, this Indian batsman was caught by West Indies’ Malcolm Marshall in the 1983 Kolkata Test and Pakistan’s Imran Khan in the 1987 Jaipur Test on the very first ball of the match. Gavaskar’s catch was taken by wicketkeeper Jeff Dujon in the Kolkata Test and Javed Miandad in the Jaipur Test.

Hannan became Collins’ victim all three times
Talking about Bangladesh’s Hannan Sarkar, he/she became the second batsman to be out three times on the first ball of a Test in June 2004. It took Gavaskar about 13 years (1974 to 1987) to get out three times on the first ball of a Test, while Sarkar was out three times on the first ball of a Test in a period of three years. Gavaskar was out on the first ball of the match three times in a long career of 125 Tests, while Sarkar lost his/her wicket on the first ball of the match three times in a short career of 17 Tests. Hannan was out on the first ball of the Test against West Indies all three times and the bowler who got him/her out all three times was Pedro Collins. Left-arm fast bowler Collins first bowled Hannan on the first ball of the Dhaka Test in December 2002. After this, he/she repeated this feat in the Grass Islet and Kingston Tests of 2004. In both these Tests, Hannan was LBW on the first ball of the match.

5 bowlers including Kapil have taken wickets on the first ball of a Test match twice
Apart from Kallis (three times), England’s Geoff Arnold, New Zealand’s Richard Hadlee, India’s Kapil Dev, Sri Lanka’s Suranga Akmal and Australia’s Mitchell Starc have also taken wickets on the first ball of a Test match more than once. All these bowlers have taken wickets on the first ball of the match twice. Apart from Sunil Gavaskar, Arnold dismissed New Zealand’s John Morrison, Hadlee dismissed Australia’s Keith Stalkpoll and India’s WV Raman, Kapil Dev dismissed Pakistan’s Mohsin Khan and South Africa’s Jimmy Cook, Lakmal dismissed West Indies’ Chris Gayle and India’s KL Rahul and Starc dismissed Sri Lanka’s Dimuth Karunaratne and England’s Rory Burns on the first ball of the match.

Gavaskar and Hannan were out on the very first ball in ODI too
Apart from Tests, Gavaskar and Hannan Sarkar have also lost their wickets on the first ball of ODIs. On 9 December 1980, in the Benson Hedges World Series Cup ODI match in Perth, New Zealand’s Richard Hadlee got Gavaskar caught by wicketkeeper Warren Lees on the very first ball. However, despite Gavaskar being out on the first ball of the match, India won the match by 5 runs. Similarly, in the World Cup 2003, Hannan was out on the first ball of the ODI match against Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka’s left-arm fast bowler Chaminda Vaas bowled Hannan on the first ball of the Pietermaritzburg ODI on 14 February 2003. Vaas took four wickets including a hat-trick in the very first over of the match and Sri Lanka won the ODI by 10 wickets.
