Türkiye: Large scale protests in Istanbul after the arrest of Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu


France 24 said that thousands of protesters on Thursday stated the city’s Mayor Ekrem Amamolulu, France 24 on the streets of Istanbul.

̇Mamolu, who belongs to the opposition party, is seen as a major rival for Turkish President Recep Taip Erdoan, according to France 24.

Many roads were closed, some social media platforms were banned, and the four -day performance ban was placed in a bid to thwart protests. However, despite the ban, many people gathered outside the headquarters of Istanbul’s Police Headquarters, City Hall and Republican People’s Party (CHP) in Oramemamojlu.

The protesters cried foul and stated that the allegations were “illegal” and “baseless”, and said that the arrest was a shock to democracy according to France 24.

“This is not democracy. It is a shock of democracy. People are not worth it. We are definitely upset. As a human, we are upset,” he/she told France 24.

The riot police blocked the roads leading to the country of the country, where the mayor was taken after his/her arrest.

̇Mamolu is a popular opposition leader and the main rival of President Recep Taip Erdoan. A total of 100 people, including the mayor and several other major data, were arrested, France 24 said.

On Tuesday, European Commission Chairman Ursula von Der Leyen expressed deep concern over Olmolu’s arrest and reminded Turkey of her obligation to maintain democratic values.

“Turkey is a Candidate country of European Union, Turkey should maintain democratic values, especially elected officials,” told reporters at Brussels, Von Der Leyen told reporters.
