Trending News: Joshimath Sinking: There is a big threat of devastation looming over these states as well, Geologist gave these four suggestions

The scope of land subsidence is continuously increasing in Joshimath. The state government has now started marking the houses and getting them grounded. It also started from Tuesday. Similar to Joshimath, landslides have also come to the fore in Karnaprayag and Uttarkashi. Cracks have also been found in the hills of China Peak of Nainital. Now the danger is increasing with this. Experts clearly say that not only Uttarakhand, but other states coming under the Himalayan range are also facing a big threat of devastation.

Where is the danger lurking?

On this issue, we have Professor and Geologist Prof. Department of Geology, IIT Kanpur. Spoke to Rajeev Sinha. He said, ‘At present the entire Himalayan range is sitting on a powder keg. Means there is danger on the whole range. It includes Uttarakhand as well as parts of Himachal Pradesh, Leh-Ladakh and Arunachal Pradesh. Pithoragarh, Bageshwar, Uttarkashi, Chamoli and Rudraprayag districts of Uttarakhand come under earthquake zone-5. Whereas, Udham Singh Nagar, Nainital, Champawat, Haridwar, Pauri Garhwal and Almora are included in Seismic Zone-4. Dehradun and part of Tehri are included in both the zones. This means that there is a high possibility of natural calamities in almost all the districts of Uttarakhand.

He further said, ‘Most of the areas of Himachal Pradesh are very vulnerable and sensitive from the point of view of earthquakes. Some areas of Lahaul Spiti, Kangra, Chamba and Shimla fall in Zone-5, while most of the districts of Mandi, Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Solan, Una etc. fall in Zone-4. Zone-5 is very sensitive and Zone-4 is sensitive. Earthquake tremors keep coming here again and again.

Pro. According to Sinha, due to repeated earthquakes, landslides and uplift of the mountains, the rocks of the mountains have become weak in these areas. In most places, people have built houses on top of the debris. Apart from this, the situation has worsened due to various hydro projects, road construction and other development works. A large number of people have established villages and settlements near the rivers. Hotels have been built on the banks of the rivers to get a good view. Due to all this, the possibility of a big disaster has increased. Most of the work in the name of development has been done in Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh only. There has been a lot of damage to the mountains here. At the same time, the situation in Leh-Ladakh and Arunachal Pradesh has not worsened much. However, despite this, the entire Himalayan range needs to be more careful.

So what should be done now?

1. Identification of susceptible areas by conducting a survey

Pro. According to Sinha, ‘Not only Joshimath, Nainital, Karnprayag and Uttarkashi, but all the districts falling under the Himalayan range should be surveyed immediately. Such places should be investigated and hazards should be marked. By doing this, the danger of life and property of people can be avoided due to major destruction in time.
