Shankar Mishra, accused of urinating on an elderly woman in Air India’s New York Delhi flight, has been sent to 14-day judicial custody by a Delhi court. Meanwhile, Shankar Mishra’s co-traveller Dr. Sugata Bhattacharjee narrated the entire incident in a conversation with PTI. Dr. Sugata had also made a written complaint to Air India about the incident. Dr. Sugata says that the accused Shankar Mishra was not in his senses at the time of the incident.
Dr. Sugata Bhattacharjee is a Doctor by profession and practices in USA. Dr. Sugata was also aboard the flight in which the incident took place and the accused was sitting next to Shankar Mishra. Narrating the incident, Dr. Sugata told that ‘Shankar Mishra had consumed 4 pegs of liquor during lunch in the flight. After which I had also alerted a crew member of the flight to keep an eye on him.
Dr. Sugata alleged that the crew members of the flight did not follow the rules. Also, the victim woman was asked to talk to Shankar Mishra after the incident whereas this uncivilized act is a crime. He said that ‘this is a physical assault and no one should have intervened when it happened. I was very angry. I don’t care what a drunk person did because he was not in his senses but the people who had authority showed no sympathy in the matter. There is a pilot chief in an aircraft but he did nothing.
She told in her complaint to Air India that after the incident, the crew member cleaned the same seat and the victim woman was asked to sit back on that wet seat, while there were 4 vacant seats in first class. Several standard operating procedures were not followed. The woman could have been accommodated in another seat immediately after the incident but she had to wait for a long time. Dr. Sugata told that when he asked the crew members why he was not being made to sit on the vacant seat in first class, the crew member replied that only the pilot can give the order but the pilot did not make any such decision.
Also, the pilot should have alerted the ground staff and handed over the accused Shankar Mishra to the security personnel. After which he would have taken appropriate action but it was not done. Dr. Sugata told that the victim woman was quite civilized and had tears in her eyes after the incident but despite this she did not create any ruckus. She remained calm even after this unfortunate incident.
Dr. Sugata said that he was talking about the incident in detail because the father of accused Shankar Mishra had alleged that his son was innocent and was probably being tortured to extort money. Dr. Sugata said it was moral for me to stand against it and I did. This whole incident is very sad. In which the self respect of an elderly woman was played with. A young man got into trouble and lost his job. His family had to face many difficulties.
