Maharashtra News: Mumbai Police caught and challaned 156 people for drunken driving and 2,465 people for riding a motorcycle without wearing a helmet during New Year celebrations in the city. A large number of police personnel were deployed in the city for the safety of people during the New Year celebrations and a drive was launched from late Saturday night till early Sunday to nab traffic violators.
The official said that the traffic police had set up check posts on various roads of the city to keep an eye on those who did not follow the road rules. He said that the city police caught 156 drunken drivers while action was taken against 66 people for rash and negligent driving. Action was also taken against 2,465 people riding bikes without wearing helmets and 274 people were challaned for allowing three people on two-wheelers, the official said.
Red light jump can be punished for one year
He said that the police took action against 679 drivers for violating traffic rules and fined 3,087 people for vehicles parked in the parking prohibition area. The police asks to follow the traffic rules so that accidents can be prevented, so it is very important to follow the traffic signals. If a person jumps the red light, then the traffic police can challan him from one thousand to five thousand.
Also, one may have to go to jail for six months to one year. According to the Motor Vehicle Act, if a person is caught driving a two wheeler without wearing a helmet, his challan can be deducted. His challan can be deducted for 1000 rupees. On the other hand, if the person does not lock his strip even after wearing a helmet, then there will be an challan of two thousand.
