Toilet paper is being used extensively all over the world. In the last few years it has become a part of people’s everyday life. In today’s modern lifestyle, people are using it as a luxury item for personal hygiene and comfort.

But it is being claimed on the internet that using toilet paper causes yeast infection. Therefore one should avoid using it as a hygiene product.

TikTok creator and sexual health educator Jenneka Juul recently shared her one-year experience of making lifestyle changes to cure yeast infection. She tried to find out whether the toilet paper she was using had caused her this problem.

But how much truth is there in this? Dr. Mahua Bhattacharya, Consultant Gynecologist of Fortis Hospital, Anandpur, explained about this in detail.

Dr. Bhattacharya said that using toilet paper with some scent or dye can cause irritation on sensitive skin. In fact, it messes up the natural flora and pH balance around the internal organs.

Due to this, the risk of yeast infection may increase. he/she said, ‘Toilet paper contains some ingredients for fragrance, dye and also contains harsh chemicals, which harm sensitive skin. Due to this the risk of yeast infection increases.

A 2010 study published in the official publication of the College of Family Physicians on Cancer supported these claims made on the Internet. It included a case study conducted on a 51-year-old woman who was suffering from burning, itching and discomfort in the vagina for four years.
After this the woman used over-the-counter (OTC) antifungal medicines but her symptoms remained the same. After extensive medical testing, it was discovered that she had a yeast infection caused by an allergic reaction to a chemical in bleached toilet paper.

After this the researchers advised the woman to use unbleached toilet paper, after which she got relief.

Dr. Bhattacharya said that unscented, dye-free and hypoallergenic toilet paper should be used. It helps prevent irritation around the vaginal area.
Apart from this, soft, damp, unscented wipes or bidet are good for sensitive skin. These practices help maintain natural flora and pH balance. Due to this, there is no irritation on the skin and the chances of yeast growth are less.
