‘Orange alert’ issued for four districts of Kerala

Amid heavy rains in various parts of Kerala, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Saturday issued an ‘orange alert’ for the day in three northern districts of the state. The IMD has issued an ‘orange alert’ for Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod and a ‘yellow alert’ for the day for nine other districts of the state. The Meteorological Department has forecast light rain with thunder and strong winds at some places in Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki and Ernakulam districts during the day. It has issued an ‘orange alert’ for Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod districts of the state from June 14 to 16. ‘Orange alert’ means very heavy rain between 11 to 20 cm and ‘yellow alert’ means heavy rain between 6 to 11 cm. The IMD said that due to the impact of cyclone over north Gujarat and west central Bay of Bengal, Kerala will receive widespread rainfall accompanied with thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds during the next five days.

Flood situation serious in Assam

The flood situation in Assam remains grim, although water levels have started receding in many parts of the state, officials said.
The Guwahati-based India Meteorological Department regional center said that most places in Assam are likely to receive moderate rain, while heavy to very heavy rains are forecast in parts of Kokrajhar district. A report released by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) on Friday night said that seven more people have died due to floods in the state. At the same time, more than 12.33 lakh people are affected in 23 districts. The number of people who lost their lives due to floods, landslides, storms and lightning in Assam this year has increased to 106. According to the ASDMA report, Dhubri district has the highest number of 3.18 lakh people affected by the floods. After this, about 1.5 lakh people in Cachar and more than 95,000 people in Golaghat are facing problems due to the natural disaster.
