Tipu Sultan was a complex personality in history… Know why Jaishankar was impressed by ‘Mysore Tiger’

New Delhi: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has described Tipu Sultan as a very complex figure in history. Jaishankar said that the politics of now is to present the facts as per one’s own. Jaishankar said that to a large extent the same happened in the case of Tipu Sultan. The External Affairs Minister claimed that a ‘special narrative’ had been propagated over the past few years about the former ruler of Mysore. The facts were molded to suit the convenience of the government.
Jaishankar, in his/her address at the launch of the book ‘Tipu Sultan: The Saga of Mysore Interregnum 1761-1799’ here, said that there are some fundamental questions that we all have to face today, how much of our past has been hidden. . he/she said how complex issues have been ignored. And how the facts have been molded according to the convenience of the government. This book has been written by historian Vikram Sampat.

In this program, Jaishankar said that Tipu Sultan is actually a very complex figure in history. On the one hand, he/she has a reputation as a prominent figure who opposed British colonial control over India. At the same time it is a fact that his/her defeat and death can be considered as a turning point for the fortunes of peninsular India.

Neglect of other aspects of Tipu’s rule
However, Jaishankar also mentioned the ‘adverse’ effects of Tipu Sultan’s rule in the Mysore region. “At the same time, it still arouses strong adverse sentiments in many areas, some in Mysore, even today,” he/she said. Jaishankar further stressed that Indian history has focused more on Tipu Sultan’s fight with the British. Other aspects of his/her rule are ‘underestimated’ or ‘neglected’.

The External Affairs Minister said that contemporary historiography, certainly at the national level, has focused primarily on the former, and has not downplayed, or ignored, the latter. Honestly, it wasn’t an accident. Speaking further about the book, Jaishankar said that being from the diplomatic world, I was really impressed by the information and insights given in this book on Tipu Sultan.
