Former Air Force Chief of the country Anil Yashwant Tipnis had made this disclosure about the use of Air Force in the Kargil war during a program. he/she told that the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee was reluctant to use the Air Force and he/she refused to allow it to cross the Line of Control (LoC). Tipnis had disclosed that incident in his/her address on the occasion of the release of the book named ‘A Prime Minister to Remember – Memories of a Military Chief’. This book was written by former Navy Chief Sushil Kumar. The former Air Force Chief told that during the 1999 Kargil war, he/she and the then Army Chief Ved Prakash Malik had a meeting with Vajpayee. Referring to the conversation that took place in this meeting, Tipnis said his/her point.

When Atal said- we will not cross the Line of Control

Former Air Force Chief Tipnis said that the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee wanted to know from General Malik whether the Army could work without the help of the Air Force. The former Air Force Chief said that before the then PM Vajpayee could answer Malik, I said that the Army needs the Air Force and we are ready. The Prime Minister thought for a while and then said that start tomorrow morning. he/she also put forward his/her point about seeking Vajpayee’s permission to cross the Line of Control. he/she said that I had never seen such a firm voice. The then PM Vajpayee said that no, we will not cross the Line of Control.

Airforce started action within few hours

Tipnis had said that the Air Force was ready to support the Army in the operation on a short notice of just six hours. Admiral (Retd) Sunil Kumar, who was the Navy Chief during the Kargil conflict, said that Vajpayee turned a ‘strategic loss’ into a huge victory. 26 July 1999 was the day when Pakistan surrendered before the Indian Army. Pakistan, which had started the attack on the border, had no option but to surrender before India.
