Clash over arrest of Chinmay Das

Chinmoy Krishna Das is accused of disrespecting the national flag of Bangladesh. On the rejection of his/her bail, the Ministry of External Affairs said that this incident has come to light after several attacks on Hindus and minorities by extremist elements in Bangladesh. Many such cases have come to light in Bangladesh where there has been arson and looting of minority homes and business establishments as well as theft, vandalism and desecration of temples.

MEA scolds Bangladesh government

The Ministry of External Affairs further said that it is unfortunate that the criminals responsible for these incidents are still roaming freely. But charges have been leveled against a religious leader who raised his/her demand through peaceful meetings. The ministry has also objected to the fact that people from the minority community who are protesting peacefully against the arrest of Chinmay Das are being attacked.

‘Government should ensure security of minorities’

The Government of India asked the Government of Bangladesh to ensure the safety of Hindus and all minorities living there, along with the protection of the right to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression. People of the Hindu community in Bangladesh have taken to the streets to protest against the arrest of Das. Protests were seen in many parts of the country including Chittagong and Dhaka. People who took part in such protests in front of Dhaka University also suffered injuries.

Attack on minorities in Bangladesh

According to reports, many protesters have been injured in the violence due to attacks by unknown people. After the overthrow of Hasina government in Bangladesh and leaving the country, many violent incidents have been seen against Hindus and other minorities. Especially the places of worship of minorities have been targeted. In August, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, while giving a statement in the Parliament, had said that the situation there is such that minorities, their businesses and temples have been attacked at many places.

India’s appeal to Bangladesh government

The Government of India has also appealed to the Yunus administration several times to ensure the safety of the Hindu minorities there. On which the Chief Advisor of the interim government, while assuring the safety of minorities, had said that these attacks were exaggerated.

Violence against minorities increased after the change of power

A government data of Bangladesh for the year 2022 says that 91 percent of the population there is Muslim, while about 9 percent of the population consists of Hindu, Buddhist, Ahmadiyya and Christian communities. After the change of power, the attacks there have come to the attention of the world. However, a report by two private research institutes of Bangladesh says that 70 percent of the cases of violence against religious minorities in the country are related to land disputes.
