This player played only 4 Tests and has 2 big records to his/her name, he/she had equalled his/her grandfather and grandson

New Delhi. Despite being an important part of cricket, fielding is not given as much importance as batting and bowling. However, there are many fielders in international cricket who have changed the course of a match with a brilliant catch or run out. The most prominent name among them is South Africa’s Jonty Rhodes, who ran out Pakistan’s Inzamam-ul-Haq in the 1992 World Cup by diving in such a way that he/she became the ‘poster boy’ of fielding in world cricket. It was Rhodes who forced all teams to take fielding as seriously as batting and bowling.

Talking about Indian cricket, before and after Rhodes, there were many players in the country who were also excellent fielders. The names of Eknath Solkar, Mansoor Ali Khan, Mohammad Azharuddin, Mohammad Kaif and Suresh Raina are prominent among them. Close-in fielder Solkar had an important contribution in the success of India’s famous ‘spin quartet’. Solkar, who was as agile as a cheetah in the field, took many unbelievable catches. Solkar, who scored 1068 runs with the help of a century in 27 tests, took 53 catches which prove him/her to be an excellent fielder.

The name of one player is missing from this list of India’s best fielders. he/she made two big records in a career of just 4 Tests. This cricketer is Yajurvindra Singh. Yajurvindra, who belongs to the royal family of Junagadh district of Gujarat, holds the record of taking the most catches (non-wicketkeeper) in a debut innings and debut Test. Yajurvindra, who made his/her debut against England in Bengaluru in January 1977, caught 5 catches in the first innings of the visiting team. he/she also caught 2 catches in England’s second innings, equaling Australia’s Greg Chappell’s record of taking the most catches in a debut Test. In the first innings, Yajurvindra caught the catches of Dennis Amiss, Keith Fletcher, Derek Rendall, captain Tony Greg and Derek Underwood and in the second innings, Amiss and Fletcher.

Yuzvendra also took 50 wickets (best 7/20) in first-class cricket. However, his/her test career was limited to just 4 tests in which he/she scored 109 runs (highest 43*) at an average of 18.16. Popularly known as ‘Sunny’ since childhood, Yuzvendra studied at the famous Rajkumar College of Rajkot and also captained its cricket team.

The record of grandfather and grandson was equaled

Before Yajurvendra, only one cricketer had achieved the feat of taking 5 catches in an innings and 7 catches in a match. Before him/her, Australia’s Victor Richardson had taken 5 catches in a Test innings (not debut Test). Similarly, in terms of taking 7 catches in a debut Test, Yajurvendra had equaled Australia’s Greg Chappell. Greg had taken 7 catches (3 in the first innings and 4 in the second) in his/her debut Test against England in Perth in December 1974. The interesting thing is that Victor alias Vic Richardson and Greg Chappell had a grandfather-grandson relationship. Vic played cricket for Australia from 1924 to 1936 while Greg from 1970 to 1984. Apart from Greg, his/her two brothers Ian and Trevor have also played for Australia.

This record was surpassed in August 2015 by taking 8 catches in the Galle Test against Sri Lanka. Rahane took 3 catches in Sri Lanka’s first innings and 5 catches in the second innings. Although Rahane holds the record for most catches in Tests, Yuzvendra has taken the most catches in a debut Test.
