New Delhi : Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is preparing to launch the first ground test vehicle and prototype of its 13 tonne medium lift Indian Multi-role Helicopter (IMRH) by 2027. Will be ready to meet many needs of military and civil aviation. This IMRH will be a versatile, indigenous alternative to foreign rotorcraft. It will have design and operational specifications tailored to the unique requirements of the Indian Armed Forces. IMRH is part of HAL’s broader vision to expand domestic production capabilities for advanced aviation technologies, promoting India’s aerospace self-reliance.

Made improvements in design

Since its unveiling at Aero India 2023, the IMRH design has undergone significant improvements to enhance both performance and safety. HAL’s recent updates to the design include improvements to aerodynamic and structural safety. These are designed to make the helicopter more flexible and adaptable to multiple mission types. Since HAL aims to meet global standards in helicopter manufacturing, additional design refinements are planned to improve the functionality of the IMRH as well as its aesthetic appeal. This will make it competitive with contemporary international models.

Taking a major step towards engine self-reliance, HAL earlier this year partnered with SAFHAL Helicopter Engines Pvt Ltd to develop the Aravali engine. It is a high power propulsion system specifically designed for IMRH and future Indian helicopter programmes. The airframer contract outlines the collaboration to design, develop, manufacture, supply and support the Aravali engine, marking a significant evolution in India’s aerospace engine capabilities.

Helpful in civil mission with army

The Aravali engine is considered the primary powerplant of IMRH. However, the initial prototype of IMRH will use existing Safran helicopter engines. This will enable HAL to continue testing and refinement of the flight characteristics of the IMRH until the Aravali engine becomes operational. Once integrated, the Aravali engine will deliver better fuel efficiency, higher performance and greater reliability. This will increase the suitability of IMRH for military and civilian missions.
