The history of forts in India is very old. The forts present here reflect the glorious history and wars of India. Every fort has been ruled by some king or the other. In ancient times, most of the kings and emperors used to live in these forts and used to fight wars with the enemies from here. But today we will tell you about a fort which has been deserted for 400 years.

No one has lived in it for the last 400 years, hence it is called ‘Unfortunate Palace’. This palace is situated in Datia district of Madhya Pradesh, whose name is Satkhanda Mahal. Shahjahan’s friend had built this palace

There are 440 rooms in this palace. Yet it has remained deserted for 400 years. This palace was built by Raja Bir Singh of Datia in 1620. he/she built this magnificent mansion to welcome Jahangir. The friendship between the two had existed since the time when King Salim was young. Bir Singh Deo had greatly helped Shah Jahan in ascending the throne when the emperor was in power with his/her father Akbar.

You will be surprised to know that neither wood nor iron has been used in this beautiful seven-storey building. This palace is completely made of stones and bricks. Due to their strength the palace has stood firm for so many years. It is said that this seven-storey beautiful building was used for only one night. After this no one stayed here.

Datia district was gifted to Bir Singhdev. For this reason Bir Singh Dev or his/her family never used this palace. It is said that once the emperor came to the palace, he/she stayed here for one night. That’s why Satkhanda Palace has been lying vacant for years. No one used it except one night.

  • Satkhanda Mahal is 7 storeyed, but it is not visible. Because its 2 storey building is built below ground and 5 above ground.
  • Because it is 7 storeyed, it is called Satkhanda Mahal. This palace is also known as Bir Singh Dev Mahal and Govind Mahal.
  • The entire cost of building Satkhanda Mahal was Rs 35 lakhs. Due to the carvings done in this palace, it took 9 years to build it.
  • Along with the temples of Lord Ganesha and Maa Durga, there is also a Dargah built in the palace.
