‘This is not a coffee shop, this is a court…’, when CJI DY Chandrachud got angry at the petitioner saying ‘Yeah Yeah’

New Delhi: On Monday, Supreme Court Chief Justice DY Chandrachud reprimanded a lawyer. Besides, he/she also taught a person who was arguing in the court a lesson about court room decorum. Actually, the petitioners were demanding an investigation against former CJI Ranjan Gogoi. In response to a question by the CJI, he/she said ‘ya, ya’. This angered CJI Chandrachud and he/she said that the court is not a ‘coffee shop’.

CJI Chandrachud said, “Don’t say ‘yaa, yaa, yaa’ like this.” Say ‘yes’. This is not a coffee shop, this is a court. I don’t like people saying ‘or, or’ at all.

The Supreme Court was hearing a petition filed in 2018 seeking an in-house inquiry against former CJI Ranjan Gogoi. During the hearing, CJI Chandrachud asked, ‘But is this a petition under Article 32? How can you file a PIL by calling a judge a respondent?

On this the petitioner told the CJI, ‘Ya-ya…the then CJI Ranjan Gogoi…I have been asked to file a curative petition…’

On this, CJI Chandrachud interrupted the petitioner and said that he/she should not say ‘Yeah’ in the court. he/she said, ‘This is not a coffee shop! What is this Yeah, Yeah? I’m allergic to this Yeah, Yeah. This cannot be allowed.

This is not the first time that the CJI has objected to someone’s tone in the court and reminded them of the decorum of the courtroom.

Earlier in March, during the hearing of NEET-UG, there was an argument between senior lawyer Mathews Nedumpara and Narendra Hooda. Nedumpara was continuously interrupting Hooda. Although the CJI had asked Nedumpara to wait, he/she did not agree. he/she insisted on speaking, calling himself the most senior lawyer and amicus.

On this CJI Chandrachud said, ‘I have not appointed anyone as amicus.’ Nedumpara started addressing the people present in the court room. The CJI stopped him/her from doing so. Nedumpara said, ‘If you don’t respect me, I will walk out.’ After this the CJI ordered the security personnel to take Nedumpara out of the court room.

The CJI said, ‘Mr Nedumpara, I am warning you. You will not address the gallery. I am watching the court proceedings here. Please call the security personnel and take them out of the court room.
