This fort of Bihar is not situated on the ground but under the earth, thousands of tunnels and cellars are still present


Located in the historic city of Sasaram in Bihar, Shergarh Fort is an ancient fort that has a glorious heritage of its own. It is believed that the fort was built in the 16th century by Sher Shah Suri, the founder of the Sur Empire. Sher Shah Suri, who is also known for introducing the ‘Grand Trunk Road’ and the rupee (Indian currency), left behind many magnificent buildings, one of which is the Shergarh Fort.
Over the centuries, this fort has witnessed many battles and many kings have come and gone here. This is the reason why the architecture seen in the fort premises is constantly being changed and repaired. Although now this fort has turned into ruins, yet the interesting stories of this place do not leave this fort. It is said that Shergarh Fort holds many mysteries in itself. You will be surprised to know that this is the only fort in India which is not built above the ground, but it is built underground. Afghan ruler Sher Shah Suri used to live in this fort which is around 400 years old. That is why it is called Shergarh Fort. This fort is present on the Kaimur Hills. If you see, then this fort will look completely different from other forts. This fort is built in such a way that no one can see this fort from outside. Let us tell you, this fort is surrounded by forests on three sides, while on one side there is Durgavati river.

To enter this fort, one has to go through a tunnel. It is said that if these tunnels are closed, then the fort will not be visible to anyone. It is said about the cellars built in this fort that they are so big that 10 thousand people can come in them at a time.

You will be surprised to know that this fort has more tunnels than any other fort. That is why Sher Shah Suri liked this fort very much. It is said that the secret of these tunnels was known only to Sher Shah and some of his/her trusted soldiers. It is said about one of these tunnels that its length goes up to Rohtas fort. No one knows about the other tunnels till date.

According to historians, when the Mughals came to know about this fort of Sher Shah, they attacked it. It is said that Sher Shah’s treasure is also hidden in this fort, but its whereabouts have not been known till date.
