Three percent reduction in wheat production
India’s wheat production is estimated to decline by about three per cent to 1068.4 million tonnes. However, the total food grain production in the crop year 2021-22 is estimated to be a record 3157.2 million tonnes. In fact, in the northern states of the country, Punjab and Haryana, the production of wheat is expected to decrease due to severe heat during the ripening of wheat crop.
Record production of these crops is estimated
Releasing the fourth advance estimate for the crop year 2021-22, the Union Agriculture Ministry said on Wednesday that rice, maize, gram, pulses, rapeseed and mustard, oilseeds and sugarcane are also expected to record record production. The crop year 2021-22 was from July, 2021 to June, 2022. According to the ministry, the total food grain production of the country is estimated to be a record 31.572 million tonnes in the crop year ending June 2022.
Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar said that the record production of so many crops is the result of farmer-friendly policies of the government as well as the tireless hard work of farmers and scientists. In the crop year 2020-21, the country’s foodgrain production (including wheat, rice, pulses and coarse cereals) stood at a record 31.74 million tonnes. According to the data, the production of wheat in the crop year 2021-22 is estimated to be low i.e. 10684 million tonnes, which was 109.59 million tonnes in the previous year. However, rice production in the year under review is estimated to be a record 132.9 million tonnes, as against 124.37 million tonnes in the same period a year ago.
The ministry said that the production of coarse cereals is likely to fall from 51.32 million tonnes to 509 million tonnes. Pulses production is estimated to be a record 20.76 million tonnes as compared to 20.54 million tonnes in the 2020-21 crop year. In the non-foodgrain category, production of oilseeds is estimated to be a record 37.69 million tonnes in the crop year 2021-22 as against 30.59.4 million tonnes in the previous year.
