As Diwali is approaching, several precautionary measures are being adopted to control the rising pollution levels in many states in India including Tamil Nadu, Punjab, Haryana and Delhi. We all know that after Diwali, the level of air pollution reaches sky high in most of the states, due to which people have trouble in breathing.

Keeping all these things in mind, states have implemented strict rules regarding burning of bombs, firecrackers and fireworks. Let us tell you that apart from ‘Green’ firecrackers, manufacturing, storage, sales and use of any other firecrackers has been banned. Let us know which states of India have banned firecrackers.

Whenever it comes to air pollution, the name of the capital Delhi definitely comes up. Air pollution has reached its peak in the capital Delhi. According to Air Quality Index (AQI), Delhi’s air has reached ‘very poor’ category. In such a situation, it is becoming difficult for the people of Delhi to leave their homes. Many people are also having trouble breathing.

Seeing the problems of the people in the capital, Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) has banned the manufacturing, storage, sales and use of firecrackers including online delivery. Let us tell you, this ban will last till January 1, 2025. Whereas if you want to burst crackers in Diwali, you will be allowed ‘Green Crackers’.

To reduce air pollution during Diwali, the Bihar government has completely banned the sale and use of all types of firecrackers, including green firecrackers, in Patna, Gaya, Muzaffarpur and Hajipur. Let us tell you, according to a circular issued by Patna District Administration, this decision has been taken by the National Green Tribunal (NGT).

Maharashtra and West Bengal

The states of Maharashtra and West Bengal have also geared up to provide relief to citizens from air pollution. Decision: Following the directions of the National Green Tribunal (NGT), both the states have banned firecrackers. Along with this, permission has been given to burn green crackers.
Which produce about 30% less pollution than conventional firecrackers, the sale and use of all firecrackers is prohibited. However, enforcement is still difficult as illegal fireworks sometimes enter these states from areas with less stringent laws. Authorities are increasing the level of surveillance to prevent illegal distribution of firecrackers.

Punjab, Haryana

Following the instructions of the Supreme Court and NGT in Punjab, the state government has adopted a tough stance. Due to which the timing of bursting of firecrackers is limited on Diwali and other major festivals including Guru Parv, Christmas and New Year’s Eve. Whereas in Haryana, especially Gurugram, the rules are similar to Delhi. During certain hours on Diwali and Guru Parv, burning of green crackers is allowed.

Tamil Nadu and Karnataka

Tamil Nadu has adopted a unique approach to avoid air pollution by setting time slots for Diwali firecrackers from 6 am to 7 am and from 7 pm to 8 pm. Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) has also issued an advisory for responsible use of firecrackers to reduce pollution and noise levels. Which is mandatory to follow. With this, let us tell you that this Diwali, the Karnataka State Government has directed to ban bursting of firecrackers for 2 hours between 8 pm and 10 pm.
