- Ludhiana by -election and political pressure
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) was expected to suffer losses in the important by -elections in Ludhiana. Local industrialists had clearly stated that if the performance continues, they would not vote for AAP. This political pressure inspired the government to take action.
- Economic loss
The business and transport sector of Punjab was suffering heavy losses due to the peasant movement. In particular, industrialists from Ludhiana demanded an immediate solution from the government. The government took this step keeping in mind the economic interests.
- Law and order
Long -term protests of farmers were deteriorating law and order, so action was necessary. The Punjab government removed the temporary structures with the help of JCB machines late on Wednesday night.
How were the farmers removed?
On Wednesday, the Punjab government got a chance when the two farmer leaders came to meet Union Ministers Piyush Goyal, Shivraj Singh Chauhan and Prahlad Joshi in Chandigarh. This meeting did not reach any conclusion. When both the farmer leaders started returning to the Shambhu border, the Punjab Police took them into custody as soon as they entered the border. Shortly thereafter, the Punjab Police raided the Shambhu and Khanouri border and also took the farmers present there into custody. The temporary structures created by the farmers were removed with the help of JCB machines. By late night, both the protest sites were completely evacuated.
Opposition parties targeted
Opposition parties Congress and BJP have strongly opposed this decision of the government. he/she has accused the AAP government of cheating farmers and stabbing the back. Some political analysts believe that the decision has been taken for the purpose of winning the Ludhiana by -election, so that Arvind Kejriwal can be sent to Rajya Sabha. The Punjab government says that this decision was taken under compulsion, as the state’s economy was being harmed by the peasant movement. Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema said that farmers can go to Delhi and demonstrate because their complaints are mainly from the Central Government, not from the Punjab government.
