There will be no benefit in postponing it… Mohammad Yunus wants a solution to the Teesta water sharing issue, what is the message for India

New Delhi: Bangladesh Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus has said that the interim government will work with India on ways to resolve differences over the long-pending Teesta water sharing treaty. he/she further said that procrastinating it for years will not benefit any country. Yunus said in an interview at his/her official residence in Dhaka that the issue of water sharing between the two countries should be resolved according to international norms. he/she stressed that lower riparian countries like Bangladesh have specific rights which they want to retain.

Yunus is serious about Teesta water sharing

The head of the interim government in Bangladesh said that there will be no use in not working to settle the issue. Even if I am not happy and sign, it will be better if I know how much water I will get. This issue has to be resolved. When asked whether the interim government will push for an early resolution of the issues of the Teesta water sharing treaty, he/she said that the new government will work on it.
Where was the matter stuck?
he/she said we have to sit together and resolve this. India and Bangladesh were about to sign an agreement on Teesta water sharing during the visit of then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to Dhaka in 2011, but West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee refused to support it, citing water shortage in her state.
