Road charges, often referred to as “tolls”, are taxes that are paid for using the country’s expressways, bridges, tunnels, and national or state highways. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has made various rules and regulations regarding toll tax, which are necessary to follow. Road charges for different road networks may vary depending on various factors. NHAI has set strict guidelines for determining the tax at all tolls across India. The toll tax is calculated for different vehicles based on their size and distance. This means that heavy vehicles like trucks and buses will have to pay more toll tax than cars. This is because heavy vehicles cause more damage to the roads than smaller vehicles.

According to the rules of the Central Government, heavy vehicles like cars, trucks, tractors, jeeps, trolleys etc. are given 100% exemption for using the National Highway and Expressway. This means that you do not have to pay any money to pass through here. Please note that two-wheelers do not have to pay toll.

The official rules of toll tax also state that some special categories of vehicles are not required to pay toll tax under any circumstances. These include emergency vehicles, military and public vehicles. If toll tax is charged from these, the drivers of the vehicles can file a complaint.

NHAI rules state that if the vehicle passes through the booth twice within 24 hours, then only one and a half times the total road charge will have to be paid. The rules state that for commuters visiting more than once, only two-thirds of the total booth tax amount will have to be paid.

According to NHAI, if you fall into the below 5 categories, you will not have to pay any toll tax at any booth across India.

  • Emergency vehicles like ambulance, fire brigade and other similar vehicles will not have to pay any road tax while crossing the booth.
  • Defence vehicles including trucks, army cars and other similar vehicles under the direct control of the Defence Department are also exempted from paying any toll tax.
  • VIP vehicles carrying or accompanying eminent personalities such as the President of India, Prime Minister of India, Chief Ministers, Members of Parliament and High Court Judges are exempted from paying road charges. Along with this, Param Vir Chakra, Ashok Chakra, Mahavir Chakra, Kirti Chakra, Shaurya Chakra winners also do not have to pay toll tax. For this, they have to show a photo identity card.
  • Public transport, such as state buses, are exempted from paying toll tax as per NHAI guidelines.
  • Lastly, two-wheelers will not have to pay any tax when crossing the booth.
