The world is going through severe stress… Jaishankar condemned terrorism and hostage taking in Israel-Hamas war

New Delhi: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar called for mediation and talks in Rome. he/she condemned terrorism and hostage-taking by Hamas during its conflict with Israel. Jaishankar spoke on the growing challenges of two major conflicts, the Middle East and Ukraine. he/she also discussed the dangerous future consequences of these conflicts. Jaishankar is on a three-day visit to Italy, where he/she will also attend the G7 Foreign Ministers’ meeting.

‘The world is going through serious stress’

External Affairs Minister Jaishankar, in his/her address at the 10th edition of the MED Mediterranean Dialogue in Rome, said, ‘Everyone accepts that the world is going through serious stress. Two big conflicts are going on. Supply chains are vulnerable. Connectivity, especially maritime, is disrupted. Climate events are also increasing. The Covid pandemic has left deep wounds.

‘India in favor of two state solution’

On the situation of Hamas-Israel conflict, he/she said, ‘India clearly condemns terrorism and hostage taking. Large-scale injustice to civilians in military operations is not acceptable. International humanitarian law cannot be disregarded anywhere. Jaishankar reiterated India’s support for resolution of the conflict. he/she said that India is in favor of two state solution. But our concerns are increasing due to the increasing conflict.

‘India is in touch with Israel and Iran’

This comment of Jaishankar has come amid the ongoing Israel-Lebanon conflict. The conflict escalated in October 2023 following Hamas’s attack on Israel followed by attacks by Hezbollah. This war has resulted in a large number of casualties and displacement. Many countries at the international level are trying to stop the war. Jaishankar also said in his/her address that India is in constant touch with Israel and Iran to stop the conflict. With respect to the Gulf of Aden and the North Arabian Sea, Indian Naval ships have been deployed since last year to protect commercial shipping.

Regarding the conflict in Ukraine, Jaishankar called for an immediate return to dialogue and diplomacy, rejecting the notion of a battlefield solution. “This conflict has serious destabilizing consequences, including for the Mediterranean,” he/she said. It is clear that no solution is going to emerge from the battlefield.
