Preparations are underway to set up an Integrated Joint Military Command to enhance coordination between the Army, Air Force and Navy. The combined command of the three services is called theater command or unified command. Coordination between the three armies is very important in times of increased challenge and war on the border. At least four theater commands will be established under this scheme. The government is serious about the theater command amid some objections from the Air Force.

Announcement can be made on the occasion of Independence Day
As per the plan, the theater command will have units of Army, Air Force and Navy and all of them will work together under an operational commander in view of the security challenges in a particular geographical area. At present, there are separate commands of the Army, Navy and Air Force. According to information received from sources, the decision to form four new theater commands will be announced by the government on Independence Day this year. Four theater commands namely Integrated Maritime Theater Command (IMTC), Integrated Air Defense Command (IADC) and two Integrated Land Theater Commands (for borders with Pakistan and China) will be fully operational over the next two years.

Separate command for Jammu and Kashmir!
A separate command for Jammu and Kashmir, which would include counter-insurgency operations, is also being considered. Its plan is almost final. The entire emphasis of the government is on unified command. According to the plan led by Chief of Defense Staff (CDS) General Bipin Rawat, the formation of the new command will start after August 15 this year. These commands will be overseen by the Commander-in-Chief (Senior Lieutenant-General, Vice Admiral and Air Marshal) in addition to the existing responsibilities.

The implementation of the new command will begin with the appointments of theater commanders, with the appointments completed by August 15 next year. The new commands will be fully operational by August 2023. The theater commanders will report directly to the Committee of Chiefs of Staff (COSC), which is headed by the CDS and comprises the Chiefs of Army, Navy and Air Force. India currently has only two unified commands, the Andaman and Nicobar Command and the Strategic Forces Command to handle the country’s nuclear arsenal, which was established in 2001 and 2003 after the Kargil conflict with Pakistan.
