The death toll in Nepal’s floods and landslides triggered by unseasonal rains has risen to 101, while 35 others are still missing. In the rain-triggered calamities, 40 people have been injured and there has been heavy damage to crops and properties. Hum Kala Pandey, head of the Disaster and Conflict Management Division, said on Thursday night that we are currently concentrating on rescue and relief operations. The loss of properties will be estimated later.

Pandey said that we have shifted more than 4,000 people from different districts to safer places. He said that the unpredictable rains that started on Monday after deficient monsoon earlier this month have affected Province 1 in the east and Far West and Karnali provinces in the west. “There was no heavy rain on Thursday, so we are hoping that there will be no more damage from now on,” he said.

Paddy worth 10 billion Nepalese rupees destroyed
Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba on Thursday visited Bajang and Kailali districts in the Far West and directed local authorities to launch quick rescue and relief operations and promised a relief package to farmers who have lost their paddy. According to an estimate by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development, 10 billion Nepalese rupees ($8 million) of paddy has been destroyed.

Ministry spokesperson Prakash Kumar Sanjel said, “We have started collecting damage reports. It will take a few days to ascertain the actual damages. The government has decided to provide 200,000 Nepalese Rupees to all families who lose one member in disasters and an additional 100,000 Nepalese Rupees to families who lose more than one member. For families whose homes have been lost, the government provides assistance between 300,000 Nepalese Rupees and 500,000 Nepalese Rupees.
